USC athletic director Jen Cohen addressed her positions on the Big Ten private equity deal and the future of the Notre Dame series.
It’s interesting this was released on a Friday while most fans our focused on tomorrow’s game with Iowa.
Here is her tortured response on Notre Dame, where she tries to have it both ways and obviously doesn’t want to become the focal point of a backlash if/when the series is ended. The whining tone about playing a non-conference road game after Week 4 reeks of Lincoln Riley.

And here is the response on the private equity deal:

The statement by Cohen on the ND series, whining about scheduling non conference games beyond the first 3 weeks, comes directly from the Riley playbook. Then schedule ND in the first 3 weeks and do it now. USC has all the leverage on ND. Freeman already said they would agree to an early game.
Better yet, reinstitute the old PAC 10 or go independent and play many of the PAC 10 teams. Screw the BIG. They are giving you an out with this 2.4 outside investment deal. Take it.

I keep hearing that we can’t get out of the Crybaby, Corrupt Big Ten until 2036….even if we reject the current television revenue distribution formula this year—- I sure hope that’s wrong—love to see Cal, Stanford, Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and USC re-formulate the old Pac 8 next year……

first off, that was virtually written by Riley. There is not a single stake holder who wants that series to terminate, other than Riley and he is holding her hostage. Keep ND and he will leave on his own w/o have to buy him out. Second, she and he just squatted on all the great players and coaches from the past 110 years of SC football rhat delt with giving a piece of them selves playing ND and hard to brutal schedules. Just shat on all of them. These schedules and rivalries are what made this school what it is and is the only reason his paycheck is what it is, hers too. They talk about this place being a special place cause it doesn’t take the easy way out like orher schools yet wants to take the easy way out. They haven’t earned that right to own the reputation built on the backs of guys who gave it all for the university. Why do they continue to whine about other schools schedules. Like a kid in elementary school tattle tailing on others. Grow a set and play someone. Hell, you have faced zero of the top 3 teams in the big 10 the last 2 years (blessed schedule) and still couldn’t make it happen. Shut the hell up and go away both of you. If y’all can’t beat ND home or away then you don’t deserve to be in the playoffs anyway. They are usually overrated and you still can’t beat them. BTW did anyone read the ESPN artical on “the next Kurt cignettie” today. Read it all the sources say about him and how he operates hands on everything, no GM, oks all recruits, oks all hires, meets with the student body every week as well as alums, has not just won but turned programs around quickly on every level. I read it, every attribute was the polar opposite of Lincoln Riley. Read and and tell me I’m wrong. I’m not. I was happy for him cause that’s how it’s done. Made me sick cause I’ve known from the beginning of this tenure this is not the guy. He was lucky to have Williams come with him or he’d be under 500% through year 4 for 11.5 mil a year. And all because usc was his life boat not to have to go to the SEC. Spineless narcissist. The worst kind.

So what do you really think Vault. What if we applied the Riley philosophy to academics at USC. Don’t major in the hard sciences. It is too demanding and academically competitive. Trade out that physics course for one in ethnic or gender studies. And 4 finals in one week during finals week is too much to ask. Let’s just eliminate that from the schedule or schedule finals over 3 weeks. Lower the bar – its what made America a welfare state.

DON: I wasn’t aware that SC had not won at Notre Dame in nearly 30-years until the 1967 “O.J game.” No wonder the win-loss record between the two is so Irish lopsided
KAM: But the 1980s and 1990s were brutal decades as ND went on like a 13-game unbeaten streak against Troy, however Carrot put a stop to that for a while. KAM: ESPN: USC and Michigan are the two Big Ten schools that have pushed back on the private equity deal, which has otherwise been supported by a majority of the programs in the conference including UCLA, as well as Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti.
DON: In a call last month between USC and Michigan trustees, sources told ESPN’s Dan Wetzel that both programs were skeptical of the deal and talked about how it does not address the root issue — soaring costs — that has made cash so imperative for athletic departments.
Who would have guessed USC’s travel costs for all their athletic teams would soar now that they have to travel 3000 miles just to play teams like Rutgers and Penn State in men’s and women’s sports?

DON: Dropping Notre Dame from SC’s schedule would have placed the 2025 Trojans at a probable 8-1 record and not their present 7-2
KAM: Which would have reduced the importance of the upcoming Oregon game. Lose that game and Troy is still a probable 10-2 and Playoff bound. Instead, they will be a probable 9-3 and Playoff ‘out’
DON: –Which means SC has little chance of making the Playoffs in odd years when they play at Notre Dame where they seldom win

California spends more per pupil on education than virtually every other state and yet has one of the worst performance rates. It is not about the money. Mississippi went back to the basics a few years ago and went from the worst in the country to one of the best. Kids in 2nd to 4th grades get tested three times a year. If they finish below the reading standard an action plan is implemented with extra tutoring. The parents are immediately notified and are given an in home study plan for their child. Teachers follow up with the parents on a weekly basis. Kids are transferred if necessary to special reading and English skills classes. Nobody is just passed through to the next grade. It works but the teacher’s unions oppose it.

DON: I would say that a rainy day normally would favor a running team more than a passing team. Runners just have to put their heads down and tear into the line. Passers are limited in their lateral movement and split ends can drop wet balls
KAM: This Iowa game is certainly no “gimme” for SC. The Hawkeyes love to run and keep the ball to themselves while preventing the opposing team from even getting the ball

The USC-ND is huge every other Thanksgiving yes because it is USC-ND, but also because typically at least one of those schools makes it nationally relevant and a cant-miss game. Games like that help build USC’s brand.
Definitely do not give that up.
Now the South Bend trip can be in September or Labor Day weekend – better for us with the Indiana weather- but the reasoning by USC to avoid that is BS. The way it is now we start conference play a week early so if we played ND in September, instead of ND in October it would be a Big 10 game. That game is likely going to be a bit easier but it’s really the same difference.

Plus, if as Cohen says, we are going to play at least one Power 4 conference team outside of Big 10, we really are just setting up the same schedule minus the ND game in October/November, which currently gives us a national buzz and is hugely important to alumni ajd former players. Many have said this already but it just looks more and more like USC wants the easy way out.
