USC Morning Buzz: Excuses Already Before The Game?

It takes no insight to gather that USC-Oregon is a huge game.

But a segment of USC followers seem to be laying the groundwork for saying if the Trojans lose, the season is still a success. I’m not sure I’ve come across this defeatist mentality before.

USC fans always believed they could win every game, whether they should or not. They didn’t enter a game with excuses in hand. Thankfully, I’m sure the players do not share this mindset.

Here’s the problem: Do not settle if you are a true USC fan. Don’t try to twist arms by praising the season in November after allowing 500 yards to . . . Illinois! Or 303-plus yards rushing to Notre Dame.

At least wait until the end of the season to judge it. Don’t write off the Oregon game and say this is the best you could hope for.

These people remind me of the great Steve Sarkisian, who went 9-4 in 2014 and labeled the season a “total success.”

  • Oregon will wear all-black uniforms with green helmets on Saturday. Nebraska also wore all-black uniforms.

      1. Zach Hanson is a really good O line coach PT. He has endured injuries to Paige, his best player, Noa, the second best player, the walk on center, the left guard, ect. and still managed to protect Maiava and produce a decent run game. Think about it – an undersized walk on has started multiple games at left guard and done a fairly good job at it. And the starting guard, Raymond, has played 3 different positions. Give Hanson props. I really think that in the next few years, with the young guys we have now and a great recruiting class, we will have one of the best O lines in college football and that is the key to winning championships.

      2. KAM: If he’s that good, he will be coaching elsewhere next year like Matt Entz.

DON: Yes he is now head coach at Fresno State.

  1. If the USC D-line can just continue what they were doing in the 2nd half against Iowa, we will be in good shape. And in a larger sense, this game will be won by the Trojan defense, or it won’t be won at all.

    1. Agree. The interior defensive line is the key. Devon Tompkins and Keyshawn Silver have been pushed around in some of the games, particularly in the first half. We need those two to show up or go to the Freshman and see what they can do.

      1. Plow,

I have seen some improvement with the oline this year. I am just used to seeing olinemen staying on their blocks. To me that is domination. SC’s blocking is more like just scrape and then move no to the next guy. I don’t care for that.

There’s a simple solution: stop hijacking Gabby’s username. Until then, it’s game on.

Cowardly Gabby embarrasses himself with every post. But why does he do it. Here is an excerpt from a recent abstract on why narcissistic personalities engage in antisocial behavior. It could be one of two reasons or both.

“Narcissists seem to disregard social-etiquette norms. For example, narcissists are more likely to brag (Buss & Chiodo, 1991), behave aggressively toward others (Barry et al., 2006, Bushman and Baumeister, 1998, Stucke and Sporer, 2002, Twenge and Campbell, 2003), and use offensive language (DeWall et al., 2011, Holtzman et al., 2010). Although it is well-known that narcissists are prone to break social-etiquette norms, the underlying causes for this tendency remain largely unclear. One possibility is that narcissists break social-etiquette norms as a means of grabbing people’s attention (the “attention-seeking” hypothesis; Buss and Chiodo, 1991, DeWall et al., 2011). An additional possibility is that narcissists, for various reasons, simply perceive such norm violations as less offensive than non-narcissists (the “insensitivity” hypothesis; Collins & Stukas, 2008)

  3. Leinart wrote today he met with Riley earlier this week, and indicates that this team has turned a big corner, and that Riley seems like a different coach. I was worried about USC getting blown out, but perhaps there is hope…

  4. Oregon will try to run it between the tackles. Same game plan as Illinois and ND. We can’t let them rip off 15-20 yard runs like ND. Make them beat us with the pass. It can be done. Both Indiana and Iowa were able to contain Oregon’s offense. But, it won’t be easy.

      1. KAM: Jordan Peterson describes Cowardly Gabby perfectly! Jordan Peterson mentions that his tested IQ from years ago is about 150. That fits with my hunch based on knowing some really bright people. He has a level of intelligence we rarely meet, which is why hostile interviewers come to grief.

That same experienced-based hunch tells me that Cowardly Gabby Q cannot be higher than the mid-80s. Telling the difference between 90 and 110 isn’t that easy. Social skills, education and what is being discussed cloud the differences. Only when someone has to learn something new does that show up. Someone with an IQ of 110 will learn easily. Someone with an IQ of 90 will struggle but eventually learn.

DON: But once someone’s IQ drops into the 80s, that becomes obvious. They’re simply incapable of seeing what is obvious to most people. You see that in Cowardly Gabby’s inability to think clearly . And she copes with situations that are beyond her ability by quoting liberal shibboleths and cliches.

He usually takes off Spring ball, and gives a halfass effort. Just the kind of guy a coach wants on his team. Over the past 7 years spanning high school and college, the Bear has played for 8 different teams.

      3.  Reported new jobs are not always just replacements for employees who quit; they can also be entirely new positions created through business expansion. However, a significant portion of reported vacancies are for “replacement hiring” to fill roles vacated by departing employees, which can sometimes lead to a chain reaction of new openings as people move to new jobs within a company.

With that said, according to the US Labor Department, trump added just over 500k new or replacement jobs.

        You’re about 2 million off…….nice try!

  8. Scooter,

the key to winning the game is to have SC’s nose tackle push the center back a yard on each and every play. He has to disrupt the blocking schemes and push whoreogon’s oline back. If SC can do that, then they will have a 65% chance of winning.
