USC Monday Buzz: The Alamo Bowl Is Not A Sign Of Success

If you play in the Alamo Bowl, can you possibly define this as a “really good season” like Lincoln Riley and his chorus of fan boys have done?

Since when is the Alamo Bowl a sign of success for a program with USC’s history and tradition?

USC lost to two good teams (Notre Dame, Oregon) and was upset by a team it was expected to beat (Illinois), although it’s hard to say it should beat Illinois when the Illini had 500 yards of offense.

The reward? The Alamo Bowl. Two years ago, Arizona fans were pretty happy when they went to the Alamo Bowl. Does USC want to be compared to Arizona?

It’s not the sign of a “really good season” when your season ends in San Antonio. But that is the spin being applied by the USC peanut gallery and its dear leader (Riley).

  • Like clockwork, USC water polo has lost in a championship match. This time the men’s team lost to UCLA, 11-10, on a last-second shot.

Former USC men’s and women’s polo coach Jovan Vavic won 15 NCAA titles in men’s and women’s water polo before he was fired during the 2019 season because of the Varsity Blues scandal.

USC has won only won one NCAA title since Vavic departed and it was in the 2019 season where he coached the team for half the season.

It hasn’t won a water polo title since then. Maybe it’s time to hire Vavic back.

  1. It takes a winning record to even qualify for a bowl game. So yes, there is a measure of success to playing in a bowl game. Is it the success SC had hoped for, no. But there is always ‘next year’

    1. KAM: At USC anything short of winning the conference title and vying for the national title is failure. Riley Coyote, in Year 4 of his $110 million contract, is a failure.

DON: Except to the rah rahs, who only care about tailgating and the Nine Layer Dip.

      1. KAM: Not having a winning record is failure even at UCLA.

DON: It’s like getting D in school before grade inflation set in. Now D students get Bs and 5-7 programs go to bowls.

      2. As a joke a teaching assistant at USC put the following column of grades in my buddy’s Philosophy 250 Practice Exam Blue Book: 69 [scratched out], 70 [scratched out], 69 [scratched out], 70 [scratched out], 69 [scratched out], 70!

[His comment was “I gave you the benefit of the doubt cuz I can see you’re doing the best you can —which isn’t much”].

Note: The teaching assistant, Ken Peters, knew my buddy well & knew he was the best Philosophy student in the department—he got an A in his final].
