USC Morning Buzz: Who Doesn’t Want To Be Defensive Coordinator?

An interesting situation has developed with D’Anton Lynn departing to Penn State.

All of the other defensive assistants would like to succeed him. Rob Ryan was at one time a top NFL defensive coordinator. Doug Belk was defensive coordinator at Houston and Eric “Dawg Work” Henderson has a case because he recruited a lot of players.

Now I’m not recommending any of them get it, I’m just saying they would take it. And will they stay if an outside candidate gets hired? Will Lynn try to hire any of them away?

Let’s say Pete Kwiatkowski gets the job. He’s probably got some guys he wants to bring with him. I’ve never known an established defensive coordinator who didn’t. So some of these guys are probably looking at Penn State or maybe the NFL too, just to be prudent.

  1. Lynn did a good job the past two years and I wish him well at his Alma mater except when he plays USC. Henderson will be the next DC and he will hire Donald to be his DL coach. Ryan will be assistant DC and if Belk goes somewhere else, Taylor Mays will be DB coach. Wish that Scott would do some actual reporting and let us know how the injured players are progressing in their rehab, especially Stewart.

    1. Scott has always been more of “an idea man.” Unlike average reporters, he reports things that haven’t happened yet: Sark will not work out, Sam Darnold would be better against Alabama than Max, Swann is gonna turn out to be a Big Joke….

    2. USC now keeps injury updates totally locked out of sight. I don’t know if other programs do that. It is difficult to find out what the specific injury is – the report is “knee injury” or “foot injury”.

  2. Jen will hire Kwiatkowski. He will bring in his own coaches. Ryan and Belk are gone. Jimmy Lake will coach the defensive backs. Henderson may be able to stay because he is a great recruiter.

  3. I don’t see how Jen makes the call without Riley’s enthusiastic consent unless she and Bowden are de facto taking the team over and giving Riley an unsubtle kick in the pants that he will be gone soon if he doesn’t deliver.

Risky move if they do that, because if the coaching staff isn’t on the same page, that significantly affects the team. Coaching conflict is a huge negative.

    1. trojan1967,

that could be a good thing. Jen Taco Lita Cohen and Bowden select the new dc. Riley and the new dc squabble. Riley is so pissed off that he leaves. SC saves a truck load of money by him resigning. SC gets a real head coach that will want to play nd anytime and anywhere.
