USC Morning Buzz: Defensive Coordinator Search Continues

Even within the USC football program, there are those wondering why a defensive coordinator hasn’t been hired yet.

Jen Cohen’s preferred choice, Pete Kwiatkowski, is also talking to Stanford. Why would he take Stanford over USC?

Because Stanford will probably give him more authority in hiring other members of the defensive coaching staff. That’s going to be a sticking point with any self-respecting defensive coordinator.

Arizona State defensive coordinator Brian Ward, who was contacted last week, has signaled waning interest, probably because he felt Kwiatkowski would get the job.

That places the search back at square one if Kwiatkowski goes to Stanford.

There could be some NFL candidates. Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden has been mentioned but the Bengals announced Monday they are bringing back Coach Zac Taylor.

  • Former USC offensive lineman Micah Banuelos has committed to Purdue.

  1. as always, water covers 2/3 of the Earth, and the WOLFMAN covers the rest!!

and all this coverage despite the fact wolfman on a Monday wolfman has a least one cheerleader his lair mewing: “Scotty-Wotty, come back to bed!!”

duty always comes first with the wolfman, not many of the Dummies on this blog realise he has not missed a day of re-por-tage in over 40 yrs, no matter how many broads he is shacked up with!!

in fact, myself and a cadre of wealthy acquaintances once offered wolfman well into seven figures to switch to the UCLA beat, but his loyalty, however unappreciated, never wavered.

  2. Al Golden would be a good hire. He did a great job with ND two years ago. The problem is that if anyone but Coach Henny is hired, you likely lose some very good defensive players. Same argument was used with Helton and Donte Williams and the administration relented to the players’ wishes. Big mistake. You have to hire the best defensive coordinator you can and it isn’t Henny who has never held that position at any level.

    1. Yes, there are some important tradeoffs. I don’t know about coach Henny other than the players, particularly those who work the hardest, love the guy. So something to be said for that. Maybe he would do a good job? Would coach Henny stay if he was given the $$$ and promoted to associate DC?

    1. Pete shouldn’t have this…taking on a project in which they wanted to see winning in 30 seconds. Hate to see him go out this way, but he did have a remarkable career. Knowing when to leave the party is so hard in life…

  3. Trojan 67′ you’re right about the sacking of Pete Carroll…his error was believing Gino Smith was a quality top tier talent and both of them assuming the outcasts and castoffs that the LV Raider roster had were capable of winning. Word has Brady likes Brian Flores former Miami head coach….just in Harbaugh sacked by BAL
