USC Notes: Stats Are Not How You Determine Value

There’s no issue with USC re-signing Jayden Maiava for next season. If he went into the transfer portal, he would be highly pursued.

But I’m tired of hearing that he led the nation in QBR this season. Stats are always the refuge of the spin masters.

Are you going to tell me if you watched the Alamo Bowl that Maiava is the best QB in the nation?

He’s got 21 career starts and it makes sense to go with him over Husan Longstreet but I don’t want to hear that he is the best per a stat. You don’t win a national title with stats, you win it on the field.

  • It would be funny to go back are read what was written when linebacker Tackett Curtis arrived at USC a couple years ago. He was nicknamed Captain America and left after a season, then transferred to Wisconsin.

Now he is off to Central Florida. Yes, Alex Grinch is there. But when you go from USC to Wisconsin to Central Florida, it’s quite a trajectory. But at least he will play, which is what matters.

  • Former USC running back Harry Dalton has committed to Maryland.

      1. Uncle Rico needs to learn the first thing about throwing a football is your throwing hand should end up in [what would be…if you were wearing pants] the pocket of your opposite side — not around your waist ….

  1. Agree with Scott that the best quarterback should not be decided by stats but which returning quarterback does he think is clearly better than Maiava. Arch Manning has off the charts talent but underperformed. The guy from Oklahoma, John Mateer was impressive. Don’t know if he is coming back. Not a lot of sure things at that position. I wouldn’t want Diego Pavia to lead my team. Don’t know if he is coming back.

  2. Look Riley’s stint at USC is hanging 100% on next season 2026.
He has an earned reputation of being clueless or indifferent towards defense ‘but’…

He’s coached ‘three’ that’s 3 Heisman Trophy winners.

If he likes Maiava he’s sees what pundits and frustrated sports writers don’t or in Wolfe’s case (and the porcine Petros Papadakis) why would anyone here listen? It’s the constant unending avalanche of mocking.
Again Riley’s entire reputation hangs on next year….I’m with him

    1. KAM: Why would anyone listen after 0-4 for Riley Coyote in winning a conference title and/or making it to the first round of the national championship playoffs?

DON: After this latest wasted season, starting with losing to Illinois and ending in utter humiliation in the Alamo Bowl TCU Debacle, Riley Coyote has spent his last penny of good will.
