USC Morning Buzz: Sprinting, Not Walking, To NFL

Would Eric Henderson have gone to the Washington Commanders if D’Anton Lynn was still the defensive coordinator? Probably.

But once USC hired Gary Patterson, Henderson couldn’t get to the NFL fast enough.

As a former Patterson colleague told me this week, “Gary’s the type of guy where you could be having dinner with your wife or girl friend and he’ll just walk up to you and start talking about something he saw on film. He’s never thinking about anything but football.”

That’s great if you are a former Patterson player or coach from the TCU days, but for these guys at USC, it’s a culture shock they won’t want to stick around for.

  • Eric Musselman said Chad Baker-Mazara has a grade one knee sprain and will not practice today or Friday. USC plays Penn State on Sunday.
  • This is a funny clip involving former USC safety Bryson Shaw with ex-Ohio State player Steele Chambers because it never actually mentions the football, coaching or winning when comparing the Trojans and Ohio State.

    1. I checked the 2026 team recruiting rankings for football. I kept looking for the gutties, page after page…finally found them at number 63! Worse than their big brother Cal Bears! Tell me it isn’t so!

  2. Scott, I really don’t understand you. You compain when the coaches aren’t intense enough; then, you complain that Patterson is too intense. Please make up your mind and get over the fact that players and coaches leave nowadays. My bet is that Lynn and Henderson got great offers that they couldn’t refuse. The object in playing and coaching is to get better job offers based on the money and position. If you are asking, would I take Lynn and Henderson and Belk over Patterson, Gonzalez and whoever he brings in for DL. My answer would be Patterson because he has the better resume.

      1. I would defer to anyone more knowledgeable than me about Scott. I just wish that he would make a case for the kind of coach that he prefers. If he complains about everyone, then what does he want and why? Dan, Class of 1962

  4. Bryson Shaw has a unique perspective given he played for USC and Ohio State. Really enjoyed his back and forth with his former OSU teammate. Shaw says USC is clearly the better decision based on the school, academics, environment, weather, marketing opportunities, NIL, facilities, ect. However, the one thing he did not mention was coaching and development and he played under Riley and Lynn. In fact, it sounded as if coaching had very little to do with his decision on where to go to school.

  5. Glad to hear that Patterson is obsessed with watching film and talking football with his assistant coaches. If that is a problem with the assistants, get rid of them. Coaches should be obsessed with the game. Carrol and Chow used to put in 20 hour days evaluating film.
