USC Morning Buzz: Football And Basketball Have One Thing In Common

USC will play North Carolina in an exhibition basketball game at Greensboro, N.C., on Oct. 9th.

USC couldn’t play the Tar Heels in a real game?

This pretty much proves again what I’ve been saying about Eric Musselman not really beefing up the schedule despite having a team that will probably be ranked in the Top 15. Has Lincoln Riley advised him on scheduling?

Ironically, the last time USC played North Carolina in Greensboro was 1981, and the Tar Heels had Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins. It was a real game. North Carolina won, 73-62, and went on to win the national championship.

No way Musselman would have taken that game.

Now USC plays North Carolina in an exhibition. Just like football, who ducks Notre Dame and drops Texas Tech.

  3. I would never have believed it — but—- the more we talk about the catastrophic loss of the Notre Dame game, the less I care about it. Bring on Oregon and Ohio State [and, phuck it all, UCLA]……

      7. btw, It was so awesome to see the pocket break down after ONE second on the 2 point try [the ALL important two point try, I might add]. But the bestest part was Bear Alexander going helmet to helmet with Utah’s QB on their last drive. So “Heads Up.”

    3. Agreed and for once all agree with Bill Plaschke who made the same point 8 mos ago when the news hit that the game was cancelled by them.
      Look at where ‘the princess’ finds herself….yes a money machine of a solo tv deal with no obligation to share…strategically selecting the weakest of the Big4 FBS conferences and, mind you class, only obligated to play 6 said members a year. But look what’s happened in 3 years….no one wants to play anyone outside their conference after mid-October…most end of September….why risk a loss let alone injuries?

      So now what does ‘the princess’ do? Load up future Septembers with credible foes and then what?

      Note BYU, that replaced USC for 2026, is playing ‘the princess’ in Provo-UT on 17th October – NOT 28th November.

      If you look at their 2027 schedule it’s even weaker than 2026 – Purdue, MI St., Auburn and BYU, 6 ACC and weak outliers…Navy, Kent St..

      Fitting end for clinging to being ‘independent’ – let them implode on their own as they’re forced to play a never ending list of inferior opponents.

  6. The expectations are way too high for USC basketball this year. Musselman, has spent alot of money on players will it pay off and save his job ?? I highly doubt he will be at USC much longer, and in a tough Big 10 Conference it is unlikely he will even make the NCAA Tournament this year.

    Sorry folks Musselman has done very little in his career to prove he is a top notch basketball coach.

  7. Scott, Scott, Scott, there you go agsin looking at the glass not even being half full. All preconference basketball games are basically exhibition games. So, playing this game as an exhibition does not take away from the fact that they are playing the game regardless of the circumstance. And, it is a win win for both teams; whoever wins can claim the victory as a strength of schedule win, and if you are the loser, it doesn’t count on your overall record. For me, this is a good mover for both teams. And, back to ND where you are like a dog with a bone. Texas Tech was never on the schedule so they couldn’t be dropped from a schedule that they were never on. Stick to what was and not what might have been. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962 P.S. I agree with MG’s take on the USC BB coach.

Just thinking about it All USC BASKETBALL GAMES ARE EXHIBITION GAMES at least the home attendance reflects that, but wha’ts really remarkable is USC can fly all the way to North Carolina to play a meaningless game. How is the world can our Basketball program afford to fly that far for such a game???/

  9. Hey SC aren’t the only pussies. The mighty oregon just added Sac State to OOC – in addition to North Dakota and Oregon State. Of course the ducks usually play D2. They wouldn’t even play Oregon St except for the rivalry.
