Saturday Buzz: Is Anyone Softer Than Lincoln Riley?

Is Lincoln Riley the softest coach around?

In 2022, he did not play Oregon and Washington (combined record 21-5).

In 2024, he did not play Oregon, Ohio State or Indiana (combined record 38-5).

In 2025, he doesn’t play Ohio State or Penn State, teams expected to be in the top 5.

And he still wants out of the Notre Dame rivalry!

  • Amazing that USC is the school where Pete Carroll’s most famous catchphrase was “always compete.”
  • How embarrassing is it that USC did not play three of the Big Ten’s four College Football Playoff teams in 2024 and still went 4-5 in the conference games?

  1. I love how Pete Carroll ceases to be referred to as “Caesar” when it’s time to point the snark gun at someone else. In light of the SEC lightweight schedules the sport has had to endure over the past decades it’s really not embarrassing at all (unfortunately).

    1. When did USC ever follow other colleges? We are College Football and we shouldn’t be weasels like the SEC. We should set an example as Pete Carroll did to all the other colleges that we fear no one and will play anyone anytime anywhere. Stop that loser mentality.

      2. I once was hired to make a presentation for a corporate group, and they had a Macallan tasting as well. I tasted the “old barrel” mix, which included some 30 and 40 year old whiskeys. Wow! Almost like tasting a powerful sherry. Anyway, the 15 year Macallan didn’t show so well after that…

      4. Yes indeed! Talk about smoothness! Finding the 15-year Macallan too harsh, I have shifted over to bourbon on the occasions that I have a whisky. Check out “Angels Envy” for a smooth bourbon with a vanilla finish. BTW, where is our old friend “Bourbon”, the Dr. from Colorado?

      8. I enjoyed some Blanton’s earlier today, Michael, as I supervised a contractor. The Angel’s Envy is good. But even more than the Blanton’s, I think I prefer the Woodsford Double Oak that Bourbon recommended. $20-30 less than the Blanton’s, but much smoother!

      10. I got 4 bottles at Staters for $80 each, but I was lucky. John Wick, Justified and House of Cards made it very popular.

        As I said (and Bourdon said), you’re better off with the Woodsford Double Oak at about $60 from BevMo or Total Wine.

        I have some Don Julia 1942 Primavera in the freezer I’m looking forward to trying. I’ve had the 1942 before, but not the Primavera. Albertsons had it on clearance a few months ago, $80 was 50% off! 1942 is so smooth, I’m sure the Primavera will be as well.

Which helps to understand who the “we” is at the end of Kamala’s outburst.

KAM: At least eight Los Angeles hotels are poised to withdraw from an agreement to provide discounted rooms for the 2028 Olympics if the city finalizes a plan to raise the minimum wage for tourism workers to $30 an hour. The hotels have notified LA28, the Olympics organizing committee, of their decision to pull out of the Olympic room block agreement, according to the Hotel Association of Los Angeles. More hotels may follow if the City Council approves the Olympic Wage Ordinance in a final vote this Friday, May 23, and the mayor signs it into law.

    The move threatens to complicate LA28’s lodging plans for Olympic officials, media and sponsors, who were expected to rely on the thousands of pre-negotiated hotel rooms across the city. Hoteliers say those rates were agreed to under very different labor cost assumptions and can no longer be sustained under the new wage mandate. “We agreed to certain rates at the hotels at that time, and it’s not viable for us to be able to agree to charge the same rates that we calculated based upon a $17 minimum wage that’s now going to be almost double that,” said Mitchell Hochberg, president of real estate investment firm Lightstone Group, which operates the Moxy and AC hotels in downtown Los Angeles—one of the properties withdrawing from the agreement.

    DON: The city obviously can’t expect hotels to stick to rates negotiated when labor costs were half of what they will now be by 2028. If Bass approves this, she’s effectively asking the hotels to lose money on one of the biggest events in the city’s recent history. “It’s not losing money for one day, two days — it’s losing money essentially for an entire month,” Filla said. “The financial calculation on this has flipped upside down for a lot of hotels.” Presumably other hotels are now doing the math and could decide to back out of the deal. Will this lead to new negotiations for higher room rates? That seems like the most likely outcome but you never really know what might happen in LA.

    1. $30 per hour to start plus no taxes on tips and overtime. A chamber maid and her grill cook husband now have a better chance to own a home in LA County than a USC medical school graduate with $200,000 in student loan debts.

      Where does the LA City Counsel get off dictating the hourly wages of hotel workers? If a chamber maid is worth $30, how much is a roofer worth? How about a landscaper or the guy who operates a jackhammer? These guys should be worth at least $45 per hour.

  5. ND generally has one of the softest schedules. Games against Miami Ohio, Army, Navy, Stanford, Georgia Tech, ect. They only played one team in the top ten last year until the playoffs and that was Indiana who was overrated.

  6. Maybe Riley can persuade Cohen to go back to the Pac 12, a lot easier now that Oregon is gone, but I think Riley would prefer the Mountain West over the Pac 12.

    Just think of the roadies to El Paso, DeKalb Illinois, Reno, San Jose, Laramie, Albuquerque, but the saving grace would be getting to road trip to Hawaii
