I mentioned this week that an ominous announcement could be coming from USC.
Several sources said USC is going to announce a 6 percent reduction in university-wide staff and no merit increases for the next three years. This is the result of a deficit for the current fiscal year that is expected to be more than last year’s figure of $158 million. One source said they heard the deficit could be as much as $200 million.
Now for the cherry on top: The word around campus is that USC president Carol Folt does not want this news revealed until after she leaves office on June 30. So it will fall into the lap of interim president Beong-Soo Kim. Welcome aboard, Mr. Interim President!
Can USC sell that house it bought for Folt in Santa Monica now?
- How does a sterling university like USC, which is one of the most expensive in the nation, have such a large deficit?
- Does it matter that USC has been paying for unnecessary 24/7 security measures that have made the campus a fortress (to the chagrin of students) because the administration completely mishandled the protests last year?
- Does it matter that it went ahead with Lincoln Riley’s unnecessary pet project football building, tore down Dedeaux Field and moved it and built a new soccer stadium without having the money in advance? That project is still $50 million short in fundraising, by the way.
When Steven Sample was president, he didn’t approve a new building until enough money had been raised to not only build it, but fund the maintenance for years in advance. This was why it took longer than expected to start building the Galen Center.
- Does it matter that USC bought a $49.4 million building in Washington, D.C., but apparently didn’t account for the costs required to renovate the inside of the building and make it a functioning university structure?
- Does it matter that USC had $23.5 million in outstanding housing loans at the end of fiscal year 2023-24, including $3.7 million to Jen Cohen and $3.4 million to Lincoln Riley?
- Does it matter that Riley makes more than $11 million, Folt and Eric Musselman make more than $4 million and Chad “Charmin” Bowden makes $1 million?
- How would you like to be a hard-working USC employee and see some of these ridiculous salaries while knowing you might get laid off?
- And now for some history:
- Look at what USC-Notre Dame tickets cost in 1964. A $6 reserved back then translates to about $62 today. How many people regretted not going to the game after the Trojans overcame a 17-0 deficit to win, 20-17.
How quaint is it that athletic director Jess Hill is announcing tickets are available. Jen Cohen can’t even comment on the USC-Notre Dame series right now.
UNIQUE RIVALRY
It seems like there are countless examples of sportsmanship between USC and Notre Dame. Late in the 1958 contest at the Coliseum, USC center and co-captain Ken Antle suffered a dislocated vertebra in his neck.
He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in downtown Los Angeles. In the picture below, Antle is presented a Notre Dame blanket by a contingent led by former Irish All-American John “Clipper” Smith (second from left), who is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Third from the left is the legendary Mel Hein, one of the greatest players in NFL history (he was NFL MVP in 1938) and a USC assistant from 1951-65. Hein is the only offensive lineman to ever be named NFL MVP. His son, Mel Hein, Jr., was a star pole vaulter at USC and held the world indoor record.
The game was on Nov. 29 and Antle was unable to attend the USC football banquet on Dec. 10. His teammate, Monte Clark, accepted the most inspirational award on his behalf (Antle was a two-time winner of the award). Clark later became the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.
This picture is dated Dec. 18, which means Antle was still in the hospital about three weeks later.
UNDERAPPRECIATED TROJAN
Frank Lopez is another one of those USC players that doesn’t get mentioned a lot but certainly merits attention. A scrappy, undersized offensive lineman, he managed to distinguish himself.
Lopez was a unanimous member of the 1965 All-Pacific-Coast team and was also an all-conference selection. The All-Coast team was a prestigious honor in those days, just a step below being an All-American.
But fans back then remembered that in 1964, Lopez recovered a Mike Garrett fumble late in the game against Notre Dame that allowed the Trojans to pull out the victory.
And he did it all despite weighing only 195 pounds, which at the time made him the Trojans’ lightest lineman.
NOW THIS WAS A GAME
- Did you know USC great Morley Drury intercepted five passes in the Stanford game in 1927? How many USC secondary players never intercept five passes in their entire career? Drury also rushed for 163 yards in the same game.
No wonder he was called “the noblest Trojan of them all.”
RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
- Does anyone remember Heckle and Bill’s Enoch Steak House in South Gate?
Well, in 1964, after USC’s dramatic comeback victory over Notre Dame, about 30 USC players and their girl friends went to the steakhouse to celebrate. They also waited for that night’s vote of conference officials to select a team for the Rose Bowl.
About 10 p.m., the news came over the radio that Oregon State had been selected.
The vote to choose the Rose Bowl representative ended in a 4-4 deadlock. Because of the tie vote, Oregon State was selected because USC had been to the Rose Bowl more recently.
“So far as I am concerned, this is one of the rankest injustices ever perpetrated in the field of intercollegiate athletics,” USC athletic director Jess Hill said.
Said USC QB Craig Fertig: “The (conference) is nuts.”
USC was 7-3 overall. Oregon State was 8-3. The USC argument was it played a tougher schedule. The Trojans defeated then-No. 2 Oklahoma, lost to then-No. 2 Ohio State and beat No. 1 Notre Dame.
The Beavers had beaten then-No. 8 Syracuse and No. 10 Oregon.

Agree with Phil Steele MG, Illinois is the key. We have a relatively new offensive line and quarterback and we will have several games to season it before we play them.
