Lincoln Riley Sounds Confident About Defense

Does anyone take Lincoln Riley seriously when he talks defense?

Here is what he said Monday night:

“We know there’s some things we have to do better, but we feel like those are things we can do better, we will do better, that we’re in control of.”

Some things?

Is Riley saying USC won’t surrender 440-500 yards in any more games? That’s a low bar.

And what are the coaches in control of? USC’s uncorked a couple awful performances at Illlinois and Notre Dame. Did the coaches see those coming? What did they do in advance to prevent them?

So far, it seems the only thing is to say how great the defensive line is or how much better the depth is. That doesn’t fix much.

P.S. — I don’t take Riley seriously when he talks about anything. But I’m giving him the benefit of doubt with the general fans.
