Morning Buzz: USC Schedules Mighty Louisiana In 2026

USC will play Louisiana at the Coliseum on Sept. 12, 2026, according to FBSschedules.

The Trojans have been looking for a cupcake to add to the schedule because Fresno State was the only nonconference game officially on the 2026 calendar.

Now it has two unattractive home games while still messing around with the status of the Notre Dame game.

This would seem to rule out the month of September for a USC-Notre Dame game. Does USC want to play the game in August? And where?

It’s all a bit ridiculous. But priority No. 1 is catering to Lincoln Riley.

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua actually addressed the situation in an interview, unlike Jen Cohen who doesn’t like to speak about it.

“I think we’ll do a short-term extension and then quite frankly there might be a gap or two in that series and then pick it back up,” Bevacqua said.

So World War II, Covid and Lincoln Riley would be the only disruptions to the series that started in 1926.

  1. All Scott ever does is mock. Louisiana has come just 6 games short of perfect seasons 5 times in recent years….

  3. Notre Dame A. D. — “I feel really good about our playoff chances [oh, we’re not? ok, thanks] …I feel very excited about playing in a first tier bowl [oh, we’re not? ok]…. I feel really positive about continuing our rivalry with USC…. just not on anything like a regular basis… in other words, I know they will continue playing football ….and we will continue playing football … in the same years…but not necessarily against each other….”

  4. Riley learned nothing from ND being left out in the cold, in part due to SOS. The NCAA rewarded the Irish for the tantrum they threw, with a safety net in years to come, so it is not repeated.

They will NOT do the same for USC, if & when that happens. Riley, if you’re going to schedule cupcakes, you NEED Notre Dame to balance it out!!

    1. Riley WILL continue to insist on patsies….but…the Big Ten portion of his schedule will provide USC with plenty of opportunities to prove their stuff….

  5. Andrew Peters (B/R— A new College Football Playoff rule change that favors Notre Dame could lead to teams avoiding playing the Fighting Irish in the coming seasons.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken, athletic directors “are threatening to freeze” Notre Dame out of future schedules over the new rule.

Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said earlier this week that the memorandum of understanding the Fighting Irish signed with the CFP guarantees the program a spot in the field if it is ranked in the top 12 starting in 2026. Bevacqua also said the Fighting Irish will be included in the field if they’re in the top 13 if the CFP expands to 14 teams.

The MOU only covers a 12- or 14-team playoff, however, so if it expands beyond that, Notre Dame will not have a guaranteed spot.

The new rule came after the Fighting Irish finished 11th in the final CFP rankings, missing the Playoff despite having a 10-2 record. Notre Dame’s only losses came to Miami and Texas A&M, both of whom made the Playoff.

A handful of teams with two or more losses made the CFP over Notre Dame, including Alabama, which finished 10-3. The Crimson Tide have arguably the worst loss of anyone in the field, as they dropped their season opener to 5-7 Florida State. Alabama also did not change positions after a blowout loss to Georgia in the SEC championship.

Notre Dame opted out of its bowl game after missing the Playoff.

While the rule change doesn’t do anything for the Fighting Irish this season, BevacquaMarcus Freeman and the rest of Notre Dame can rest assured knowing if they have the same result next year, they’ll have the chance to compete for a title.

  6. Please explain why Cohen or anyone else needs to placate Riley? What is he going to do?

Riley: I don’t want to play ND.

Cohen: You are going to play ND.

Riley: But it makes it harder to win a NC.

Cohen: Yes, and we expect you to win one while playing ND. If you don’t like it, quit and see if anyone else will pay you $10 million for 7-9 win seasons with no playoffs. Now why don’t you start interacting with the fanbase and embracing our traditions.
