USC Morning Buzz: The Unthinkable Happened And Some Actually Cheer It

Did any of you imagine in your lifetimes that USC would stop playing Notre Dame?

I covered USC for decades and never pondered whether the schools would ever reach a deal to keep playing.

Let’s look at what Pete Carroll said the week of the 2003 game vs. Notre Dame:

“I think it’s important that we do talk about what this great match-up means and how it is important to a lot of people, not just the players. It means a lot to the Trojan Family.”

Trojan Family? Whatever happened to that concept?

The athletic dept. today is only interested in money and social media engagement.

The fanboys and their peanut gallery media has twisted itself into pretzels this week trying to justify USC’s actions. USC is in the Big Ten and doesn’t need Notre Dame. The Irish had a secret deal with the College Football Playoff (that actually wasn’t a secret deal). USC cannot play Notre Dame in November.

These people will believe anything once they get their marching orders from Lincoln Riley/Jen Cohen. They would have told you four years ago that USC was definitely going to win a national title under Riley.

Their existence relies on making it sound like every player is going to make a huge contribution and transform the program. Their actual knowledge is pitiful. And they couldn’t tell you most of the traditions that made USC.

They would cheer on every move of Pete Carroll. Do you remember Carroll called Florida and begged for a game when Urban Meyer had the Gators at their peak? He loved to play the best. Now they cheer on Riley for acting the complete opposite.

  1. You nailed this one Scott.

I know one thing…. Riley has created for himself undoubtedly a make-or-break season next year. Make the playoffs or you are gone. If one of the excuses to not play Notre Dame is to make it easier to make the playoffs – USC better freaking make it.

      1. KAM: Riley Coyote promised us championships in 2021!

Now we are told SC must duck hard teams and we should wait until 2027 for championships!

DON: For $110 million Lincoln Riley is not a Best Value.

      2. Please keep Coach Scaredy-cat for his entire contract term. Become Nebraska.

        ’26 is Linc’s 5th year, no excuses.

Beat ND once when a generational QB had a Heisman game. Even then Irish almost won with their 3d string QB. Smh.

  2. If USC goes 10-2 next year against a very tough schedule and makes the playoff, all we be forgiven. At least that is what Riley is banking on. People have short memories. If the team falls flat, goes 6-6, there will be no forgiveness and cries for Riley’s head and Cohen will fire Riley.

KAM: Fox Sports /USC Athletic Department toady Colin Cowherd has predictably expressed support for USC’s decision to pause its rivalry with Notre Dame, arguing that the focus should be on reaching the College Football Playoff rather than maintaining traditional rivalries. He believes that playing against elite teams in the Big Ten is more crucial for USC’s success. Except there are 18 teams so you don’ t play the top teams every year.

DON: Colin Cowherd went to Eastern Washington. Their rivalry Governors Cup game was between EWU and  the University of Idaho until they left the Big Sky Conference in 1997. Now they play Montana. So his school gave up their football tradition 28 years ago. He knows zero about the tradition and greatness of USC and is the last one to be lecturing about it.

  5. What is wrong with you people? Scott Wolf made fun of Pete Carrol and now he’s acting like Mark Antony and mourning his absence? USC sold out a long time ago and they’ve been chasing a dream ever since the NCAA abused them and chased “Ceasar” away. Revenge. You morons have begged for revenge against all of these bastards. Including Scott Wolf. Well THIS IS THE PRICE FOR THAT REVENGE!! SHAME ON ALL OF US FOR WANTING REVENGE!!! Tradition and honor have no place in this devil’s pact. Please Lord, have mercy on our souls and cleanse us of this desire so we can reclaim our grace. A sad moment indeed.

    1. This was bound to happen because independent ND wants anything that helps them keep their NBC money and playoff money for themselves. As long as the series helped them get into the playoffs and gave them recruiting opportunities in Southern California as well as a warm weather vacation in November, they loved the series. Once USC stood up to them on an equal footing ans asked for an Early season game time, they would not compromise. ND is just like the old Pac 12, they would use USC and not give an inch. My very first game was the USC vs. ND game in 1948 and I was in attendance at the 1964 game when we ruined their perfect season, but I don’t relish the series enouth to hurt our chances at a playoff championship. Prior to the playoffs, an ND win meant a lot towards a poll championship like in 1974, but the playoffs have changed all of that. We were 11-1 in 2008, beat ND and didn’t get into the two team playoff. Why should we help ND build their resume to be in the top 12 to get into these playoffs. Let them join the Big Ten and we can play them every year on an equal footing. Scott Wolf is an idiot. When you are a true Trojan, you always do what is best for your school….now he loves Pete Carroll after ridiculing him while he was coaching at USC. I have a lot of criticism for Lincoln Riley just as I have had with numerous USC head coaches. Only four of our head coaches have won national championships. There is only one undefeated team in the playoffs this year….and there are a lot more with more than three losses. We want a competitive team on the field and fans who can at least see the glass half full.

      Fight on,

      1. Agree with every word — except the “Scott is an idiot” part. We are entering the dry season between football and spring practice. The end of the Notre Dame/USC rivalry is pure gold for Scott. He has to mine it.

      2. Nit: USC requested and agreed to the October/November set up with Notre Dame.

There are no teams with more than 3 losses in the playoffs.

2008 was one of the seasons that screamed out for the playoffs to be expanded, initially from 2 to 4 teams.

My dad talked about the phantom penalty in ’64 that stole a natty from ND for over 50 years.

        Keep Lincoln, become Nebraska.

  6. USC supporters are paying a price for wanting to get revenge against the NCAA and the other schools. Tradition has to die. Honor must be abandoned. Revenge must be satisfied at all costs, apparently.

  9. KAM: As is often the case in sports, one fan base’s gain is another fan base’s loss.

It just usually doesn’t involve the same exact team.

  10. USC will rue the day they abandoned the annual marquee games with Notre Dame. That is because the next step of the new real owners of these semi-pro teams, the NIL investors, will disconnect the teams from their schools entirely. Oligarchs 1, the Rest of Us 0.

    1. Not so sure the “oligarchs’ wanna house, educate [optional], staff and feed “their” teams when they can stick the universities with that part of the deal…..

  11. Notre Dame gave Riley and Cohen a great excuse to extract USC from the series.

And these are the caretakers who inherited one of the greatest traditions in American culture? Do the leaders of both schools desire money above honor? What’s next? Creating robots to play instead of humans? I blame us the fans of both schools for allowing cubicle folks to take this tradition away. This really is a time for visible and significant protest of a major, organized sort.

    I’m burned out.
