USC Basketball Could Need Years To Recover

Don’t think people on the inside at USC were surprised by Friday’s Yahoo story that showed alleged payments to Chimezie Metu and Bennie Boatwright. There have been rumors for months that more was coming after the initial Tony Bland-arrest announcement.

I’ve heard that some USC officials believe the school should self-impose a two-year NCAA Tournament ban in an attempt to lessen eventual penalties. Don’t forget the NCAA won’t even start investigating until the FBI finishes its own investigation.

Some sources at USC believe even more charges are coming.

And then there is the future of USC coach Andy Enfield? Can he survive the fact three starters have now been part of this scandal? What did Enfield know about any of this?

I wrote earlier this week that a USC source told me stability was the reason Clay Helton got a five-year contract extension because of basketball’s meltdown. Friday’s events bolster that theory.

This has turned into a debacle for USC. And it is probably going to take years for the basketball program to recover.

Isn’t this how it always is with USC basketball? Just when you think it is ready to become a national power, something happens.

UPDATED: USC announced Saturday morning it will allow Metu to play vs. Utah.
