USC tailback Ronald Jones will stage a second Pro Day next month when his hamstring is presumably healthy. But it was clear Wednesday that he needs to show NFL teams he can catch passes out of the backfield. Jones dropped two passes Wednesday for whatever reasons (hamstring, rain).
But he caught only 32 passes in three seasons. Did USC properly prepare him for the NFL? It’s an honest question since USC always touts its “Projans.”
Jones is expected to be a successful NFL pick. But when he arrived as a freshman, pass blocking and catching passes were weaknesses. And now with NFL teams, there will need to be demonstrations he can catch passes out of the backfield. USC should have thrown to him more during his career. Or else worked with him more on it.
Seems Rojo was busy blocking. Hard to do both. Perhaps they did work on him catching passes, but when you have to stay in the backfield to save the QB you take yourself out of any routes.
