Wednesday Notes

Some USC midweek notes:

  • I mentioned yesterday that Porter Gustin is getting rave reviews but really should be dominating against USC’s offensive line during spring drills.
  •  The same should be said about Iman Marshall. He is also having a good spring. But he is also facing Matt Fink, Jack Sears and walk-ons every day in practice. The question is whether Marshall will be able to defend receivers better next season after a fairly disastrous junior year. Will he still look like a safety playing cornerback? Will his technique improve?
  • Clay Helton says the secondary has been the best group of the spring. Is that a dig at Jack Jones, who is suspended from spring football?
  • Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network, who generally seems upbeat about USC, had this quote about Ronald Jones:
  • “He’s had a poor offseason. He has not helped himself at all. He’s been a little bit nicked up and was not impressive at his makeup pro day.”
  • USC is expected sign a top 15-ranked basketball class starting today. Three top 100 players signed: point guard Elijah Weaver, shooting guard Kevin Porter and power forward J’Raan Brooks.
  • This is the fastest USC’s ever announced receiving its letters of intent. Sometimes it takes weeks for USC to announce its basketball recruiting class.
  • Former USC basketball player Keith Wilkinson has been hired as the basketball coach at JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano. I hope he is ready for the brutal competitiveness of the Trinity League, which includes Mater Dei, St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita.

  1. Answers to your questions, Scott: (1) Marshall (and the rest of the corners) will continue to look great …. in practice. They’ll be all over Fink’s passes from September to December. Helton will, however, be forced to admit at some point in the season that “there’s a bit of a drop off in actual games — we’ll need to look at the tapes to discover the cause —but we think it could have something to do with the fact that the quarterbacks our corners see in games are better than the quarterbacks they see in practice.”
    (2) Keith Wilkinson can’t handle margaritas? 3 games into the season, Keith Wilkinson will down all the margaritas friends and fans are willing to spring for.
You didn’t ask about this one, but here’s a prediction anyway —USC’s 2018/19 basketball team will accomplish all the things we expected of the 2017/18 team.

  2. Only believe Scott. Try to be positive. And on on the Jack Jones question. Remember Coach Helton does not think like you do. He is a pretty positive guy.

  3. Hope the three basketball hot shot recruits do way better than Mr.
O’Bannon of last season. He was a McDonald’s AA who was absolutely
worthless during the 2917-18 year being a mop up player off the bench.
He was one and done literally with his production. Anyone have an idea what his problem was if physical or mental?

  4. Well that sums it up. USC might as well get rid of the football program since the sky is officially falling. Not one positive report on this blog so far…
