USC Saturday Buzz: Wide Receiver Mania Continues

USC’s had an infatuation with recruiting wide receivers in recent years, sometimes at the expense of other positions.

Right now, USC’s offered 21 wide receivers from the Class of 2019 and 12 from the Class of 2020.

That’s a lot of wide receivers, obviously. Offers are harmless, especially with today’s trend of schools making offers but telling recruits they cannot commit.

And there’s nothing wrong with this if you balance your team. But sometimes USC’s had depth issues at cornerback, for example, while an array of wide receivers sat on the sidelines.  Just something to keep an eye on.

  • Former USC guard Julian Jacobs is playing basketball in the Drew League this summer.
  • Deland McCullough II, the son of former USC running backs coach Deland McCullough, has committed to Miami of Ohio, the same school his father attended. The younger McCullough is a wide receiver/cornerback.

  1. “A lot of wide receiver offers. There’s nothing wrong with this if you balance your team.” Too reasonable. We need stuff we can really get vexed over.

  2. This is a mental problem and can turn into a team problem. They have other needs besides wide receivers. What happens if the coaches change and they change the offense. They are stuck with too many receivers. Enough in receivers. I want to see o line and dine, db’s, lbers

    1. P. T. — You’re not planning ahead! What happens if we’re playing UNLV and Tyler Vaughns gets hurt and we replace him with Josh Imtorbhebhe, but Josh gets hurt and we replace him with Velus Jones, but Velus gets hurt, so we replace him with Trevon Sidney, but Trevon gets hurt so we replace him with Keyshawn Young, but Keyshawn gets hurt so we replace him with Michael Pittman, but Michael gets hurt so we replace him with Randall Grimes, but Randall gets hurt —-then what?!!

  3. Wide receivers are athletic players. They can become valuable players on the other side of the ball. If the kid isn’t locked in to a position, he can be of value to the defense. Who better to train to chase receivers than a former receiver ? It’s even heard of receivers playing on both sides of the ball. When recruiting I believe USC needs two types of athletes, those who can block and have bull and those who are built for speed. Skills are nice but without one of those two qualities, they are destined to founder.
