A Sign Of Fan Discontent?

USC held its Salute to Troy kickoff dinner on Friday night. The ony time this event made news was when Steve Sarkisian got drunk a few years ago.

But evidently that has not spurred interest in the dinner. A booster who goes every year told me the crowd was noticeably smaller Friday night. He said it was half the size of crowds in past year. Who knows?

He did not know why the crowd was less when USC has players like JT Daniels and Amon-Ra St. Brown to meet-and-greet the fans.

I would argue it is a carryover from last season when fans became disenchanted with the sloppy play on the field. Remember how quiet the Coliseum was after USC beat UCLA?

Before fans get too excited, they want to see an improved product on the field.

  1. I wonder if the crowd size for Salute to Troy (assuming Petros did an accurate count) has more to do with all the flux in administration than it does disenchantment with the team. After all, USC doesn’t even have a real President at the moment. A bit of the luster is going to be missing at these events for a while.

  2. What I heard was that with all the construction, Parking is a nightmare. Why drive down to SC and fight to find parking when it’s not 100% necessary?

    1. I’ll venture a guess here.
Perhaps there are some Trojans that now understand that the Lack of Institutional Control the NCAA pointed out some time ago permeated not just the Athletic Department but, indeed, the entire institution. Perhaps those that didn’t attend now understand that the institution sold their souls for the football program and the money it attracts. Perhaps they have a conscience and some shred of dignity and don’t want to wade into the swamp until it no longer gets stink on them (or maybe they were just on vacation.)

That did not stop the ugly ruins following Johnny “Cheetin'” Wooden into purgatory. Talk about cheetin’, Yes, he was the Wizard of Cheetin’ at westweird.

  3. The comment section is not as active as the old blog was. SW’s posts are generating about half the comments as on the old site. It must be “A Sign of Fan Discontent”. Please, don’t bother to offer any other explanations as I have come to a firm conclusion on this.

      1. “0” comments at the Chronicles….Now that’s some serious discontent! I guess negative attention (this blog) IS better than no attention.

      2. Discontent would be a step up from where I am today, Pudly. I’m doing everything I can to be obnoxious (including going on a Howard Hughes-like continuous loop of saying “get me the blueprints”) and I can’t even arouse discontent.

      3. So true, Cardinal & Gold. Scott would rather get attacked 100 times a day than sit around waiting for the reply that never comes (Conquest Chronicles, Trojan Insider, etc., etc.).

  4. SCooter,

Lots of reasons why fans are upset, just some are: no oline coach or oline, no db’s or db coach, no offensive coordinator, Haden’s Tower of Babel, no parking at the game, people had their seats removed for the Tower of Babel, fullback to block on short yardage situation, no recruits for the oline, and too many wide receiver recruits. There is more but not enough room to tell them all.

    1. Arroyo Seco – attaboy! Especially noting Haden’s ‘Nimrod tilt up’

Question class – how many ‘chairs’ (not seats) will ‘Capper’ get in the ‘sky tower’ being constructed on the south side? In fact, did ‘Capper’ turn in his ‘key’ to the ‘patrician lift’ at Galen? I sure miss those ‘This is an American Moment’ idiocy look-a-likes Haden did for USC Athlete yah yah yah. I wonder if Haden phoned Brokaw? Bet he did, after all, why wouldn’t someone with Haden’s stature be denied access to someone as boring and full of himself as Brokaw?

  5. It was $75 per person and $40 for kids. That’s a bit much just to hear coaches and administrators talk.

I’m sure a family of four could have found a better way to spend a fraction of that on some other Friday night entertainment.

  6. Perhaps fans have been there and done that. I know the Hollywood Bowl is hosting the USC marching band at playing the 1812 overture but my wife said, ” we saw that last year. ” Maybe people had to wash their hair. We may never know.

  7. My friend was a season ticket holder right under the press box. With the renovation of that side of the coliseum, and their seats being eliminated, they decided not to renew their season tickets and their Trojan Fund membership. She said a number of her friends around there say the same thing. Not sure if that is the cause for less people but could account for some of them.

  8. Just Owns

Unreal, the same loser Rah-Rah’s still whining about JW and at the same time ignoring their exalted BB coach Andyain’twinning’s pathetic record – LOL.

JW never had one of his Asst Coaches arrested by the FBI for buying and selling second-tier bozo BB recruits.

JW never had to hire the father, of two prize bozo recruits, with zero University BB coaching experience, just to land one commitment.

JW never coached a highly ranked bozo veteran BB team (#7) that failed to make the NCAA BB Tournament, and then lose a Second Rd. NIT Tournament game at home, attended by just bozo 623 fans.

Unlike Andyain’twinning, JW never had an accumulated losing Conference record.

JW never lost to a short Army team at home.

JW never lost to bozo U BB 103 – 70.
