USC Officially Hires Mike Jinks As Running Backs Coach

At least we know Clay Helton had nothing to do with this hire: Mike Jinks, who was Kliff Kingsbury’s running backs coach at Texas Tech from 2013-15. He was also associate head coach in 2015.

He lasted 31 games as head coach at Bowling Green before getting fired with a 7-24 record.

So now he will be USC’s running backs coach. In 2014, Texas Tech running back DeAndre Washington became the first Red Raiders player to rush for 1,000 yards since 1998.

OK, so it looks like Kingsbury needs to hire a wide receivers coach and Clancy Pendergast (or Helton) need to figure out who to hire as a defensive backs coach.

USC also officially announced the hiring of Boise State defensive line coach Chad Kauha’aha’a.

Is this change you can believe in?

  1. Any predictions on USCs football record after the first six games next year? Could see 1-5. Or 2-4 easily.3-3 would be a major victory. Could see wins over Fresno St and BYU with losses to Stanford, Utah, Notre dame and UW. Especially with Eason at QB at UW, there is already potential All American talk for him for next year

    1. I don’t see any wins in there. If Fresno State can beat the bruins, only God knows what they’ll do to Clancy and his pillow soft D.

      Since it’s Christmas, I’ll give you BYU. Southern Cal is 1-5 to start next year. Hopefully nobody comes and poaches coach gomer before 2019 (chortle).

  2. Yep! When you’ve got the top offensive mind in the country as your new O.C., you give him latitude in making the hires he wants. As if we’d trust YOU to do the hiring? Ha! We love your snark, Scottie, but your hiring acumen has been less-than-stellar over the years.

  3. Once again, it boils down not to the oc or rb coach, but the oline coach. The oline is the motor that keeps the machine going. So all this falls on him. If he succeeds, then all the coaches succeed.

    1. if the ‘O’ line coach is allowed to have full contact practices at full speed against a real defense…helton has called the shots for 3 years …mostly half assed practices that developed no one…

  4. Gomer’s still ” in charge”, his butt buddies Clancy and Baxter are still there, useless S&C coach is still there so the D and special teams are still a mess , Clancy wants yes men and Swann er Gomer says no, will Clancy leave before the 2019 season even starts ? KK is a one and done and we can all hope for the same for Gomer, one and done because this football program is still a major dumpster fire thanks to Patrick C Haden and Lynn Swann, two of the most incompetent people to ever be AD’s anywhere and the worm that is Max Nikias

    1. Pendergast should have been fired. his defense against the run is 49-55 in ranking. Sc normally is in the 8-13 range in giving up the run, with 1 being the best. He needs to change his defense to a more conventional defense with a 4-3 look. He then can move pieces from their, however, the 4-3 look stops the run as well as that new contraption called pistol, rpo, and rest of that stuff. Dline must not get blown off the line of scrimmage. They must be in attack mode. Too many times they were pushed back. DB’s were atrocious. Not enough interceptions and too many flags. Pendergast’s defenses are soft. Not enough sacks or tfl’s.

  6. Coach Kauha’aha’a?

    OK I’m sure he is a fine person and fabulous coach BUT..

    1) I challenge you to say his name three times in a row in public without someone trying to perform The Heimlich Maneuver on you and;

    2) Chad? Really? Chad?
    Those two names go together like SoCal athletics & sanity.
