Spring Clichés Are Flying!

The biggest problem with spring practice is how things get blown out of proportion.

Here are some time-honored stereotypes you probably heard already:

  • A coach is yelling so he must be doing a good job!
  • Look at those new players (in shorts and no pads) who enrolled in January!
  • Somebody gained 15 pounds!
  • The defense is flying!
  • The offense understands the system!
  • The quarterback is being a leader!
  • Clay Helton has learned from the past!
  • The team is getting along better than last year!
  • Aaron Ausmus is the new strength coach (2010, 2019)!
  • Practices are more enthusiastic!
  • Practices are harder!

I could go on. And go back a year and you’ll find many of them as USC was headed toward a 5-7 season.

    1. Nice comment, S.K. [And, although I want USC to win as much as anybody, I have to admit everything Scott said above is true].

    2. Speaking of different and spewing the same venom, look in the mirror, SW. Your posts are all the same- drab, full of cynicism, whiny etc.

    1. Flow’s not allowed “Inside USC” anymore. He’s an angry, creepy, “I love college cheerleaders” and wearing soccer jerseys kinda dude.

  1. Worth a read – today’s LA Times on yesterday’s practice – not sure how credible the claim that Helton has ‘changed’ but at least he’s finally stopped laughing at players getting penalties with no blowback.

The practice being discussed right now on ‘Tunnel Vision’

    1. Helton WAS more focused yesterday, Alv —-now, let’s see how long that lasts. Let’s see if he goes back to the grade school “Happy Tuesday, Everybody!” if they win 2 games in a row. Let’s see if he turns into a bully with the press if he loses 2 games in a row. We don’t really know anything about the NEW Helton yet —-we don’t even know if there IS a new Helton yet.

    2. Jesus H. Christ! Helton has been with the Trojans since 2010, when in the hell has anyone ever seen anything out of him to make them think that he has a clue as to what he’s doing?

Helton wasn’t worth a shit as a QB coach, even more worthless when he was an offensive coordinator and garbage as head coach.

You can’t fix stupid and when it comes to football…Helton is beyond stupid. So for those of you who believe Errand Boy is going to have some kind of awakening and somehow all of a sudden he’s going to be able to start developing players…you’re either dreaming or smoking crack.

It’s never going to happen, Helton is what he is, incompetent.

      1. tebow —Nobody in their right mind thinks Helton is Saban or Meyer (that’s already been proven —very, very convincingly). Some of are hoping, though, that Helton’s been secretly reduced to “coach in name only” (e.g., someone who gets to walk around at practice shouting at players “Call me Coach!” —like he did yesterday).
[I readily admit it would have been better if Harrell got to pick his own o-line coach and receivers coach—-but maybe he has a chance to save this thing in spite of Helton]…….

  2. This will be the only time you will see J.T. Daniels not under throw his receivers.

Daniels looked good in Errand Boys lightweight practices. Sure he’s going to connect with receivers because he has no defenders in his face. The guy has tunnel vision, did not show that he can look off defenders, he did it all season long.

Fink and Sears are not going to get a legitimate shot at starting, Errand Boy is infatuated with Daniels having been labeled a top 3 QB coming out of high school.

There were a lot of QB’s in high school that could have put up the numbers Daniels put up at Mater Dei if they had played behind that offensive line. Daniels was rarely pressured, hurried or hit so of course he looked good.

Daniels will perform this upcoming season the same way he did last season. The Trojans offensive line issues will be exploited once again because Errand Boy continually focuses on using most of his scholarship offers on WR’s. Every year it’s the same thing with this idiot Helton, he has a ton of WR talent and every year it gets wasted because he has no clue just how important it is to have an offensive line that can pass protect. If Errand Boy hasn’t learned that by now, he’s never going to get it.

  3. You are going to find out if the discipline takes affect this season. You know you are great when knowing you need to stop the opposing offense in the 4th quarter where they are on your one yard line and it is first and goal. They are ahead by six points and you turn them away knowing your offense will drive 99 yards and having the sense that you have won the game even before your offense even has the ball.

  4. I am glad I’m not the only one reading these stories of great changes and better times ahead, thinking I’ve heard this before. I am not from Missouri, but show me don’t tell me. I have to see improvement before I’ll believe there has been improvement. I believe this is how many fans feel. Helton committed far too many clueless mistakes to ever convince me he knows anything about coaching football.
While I initially thought Lynn Swann was a good hire, knowing he had no experience, I now see the damage no experience can cause. This charade calling itself USC football has gone on for too long.
The only fix for this is a clean slate.
