The college admissions scandal already involved UCLA but it wasn’t the first time for the university.
The Los Angeles Times reports that UCLA’s women’s track program took a student not considered good enough by the coach to compete but her parents agreed to pay the athletic dept. $100,000.
“The young woman’s admission to UCLA as a recruited athlete — and her parents’ subsequent $100,000 donation pledge to the school’s athletics program — were detailed in an internal investigation the university completed in July 2014, a year after she began taking classes.
“The confidential report, reviewed by the Los Angeles Times, shows that years before the current college admissions scandal, UCLA knew of allegations that parents were pledging donations to its athletic program in exchange for their children being admitted to the university in violation of rules prohibiting the practice.
“Three days after UCLA’s Student-Athlete Admissions Committee approved the runner’s admission, one school staffer emailed another about her parents’ donation pledge: “We got a deal at $25 x four years for track.”

The major difference being the UCLA donation went directly to the UCLA Athletic Dept., not to a for-profit third party and/or charity fund front to distribute the illegal funds to the various scam links like the Clown U RICO operation.

MG, as a former prosecutor, what are your thoughts between:
(1) an institution with systematic knowledge about the admissions practice ranging between athletics and development, perhaps very senior administrators, and perhaps other departments
(2) an institution with some rogue employees, but apparently without systematic knowledge of what was going on.

MG, I agree – Sam Gilbert alone puts ucla in the “most corrupt” conversation. Who knows how many of Wooden’s championships would have been rescinded if the NCAA wasn’t afraid of the clusterf**k that would have ensued had they investigated ucla going back to ’66 when Gilbert first started “helping” the kids.
The players themselves freely admit what Gilbert did. But of course, Wooden didn’t know…
