USC Afternoon Notes

Being a USC athletic director is a chummy club. The last three were well-known former football players. So they all must have gotten along, right?

When Mike Garrett was USC athletic director, he told a head coach, “Pat Haden is gunning for my job.”

Haden, who was on the Board of Trustees at the time, eventually succeeded Garrett when he was fired by Max Nikias.  Things were even worse in 2016, when Haden and Lynn Swann were both at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.

Swann was going to be named athletic director a couple days after the Masters but he never told Haden that weekend he was going to replace him. A prominent L.A. sports figure told me Haden said he would never forgive Swann for not informing him of the change.

  • Former USC guard Jordan McLaughlin had some good stats at last week’s NBA G League Elite Camp. He shot 65.7 percent from the field, 46.7 percent on 3-pointers and 91.7 percent on free throws. Overall, McL:aughlin averaged 16 points and 6.3 assists.
  • Former USC forward Victor Uyaelunmo has transferred to Towson.
  • The California state senate passed a bill, 31-4, that would allow college athletes to earn compensation for the use of their own name, image or likeness, beginning Jan. 1, 2023. The bill goes to the state assembly.

      1. Wonder what Pete Carroll thinks – not just the state of USC – of Pat Haden? Most will claim he (Carroll) thinks nothing – I don’t concur. Not saying he does so ‘excessively’ but I do think he would have some keen insight, upon his abrupt departure, what should have been done and wasn’t.

      2. Alv —
Pete Carroll (to Lynn Swann): Do you have any idea how crazy this is?
Lynn Swann: Do you mean the nature of this conversation?
Pete Carroll: No, I mean the nature of you.
(With Apologies to Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson & No Country For Old Men)……

  1. I thought Max Nikias was Pat Haden’s Boy, so Why doesn’t Haden get mad at Nikias for not informing him that he was being replaced? 🤔

    1. I believe it was the blowback, mild as it was, for the Mayr Foundation scandal. Hayden knew the Times was going to go ahead with the story, that was published 3 years ago next month, months before its’ release. On top of that Hayden had his ‘medical issues’ that necessitated his being hospitalized twice.

Hayden could not stay on as AD with the Mayr Foundation expose approaching – he (Haden) knew it and so did Nikias. It was prudent for USC to accept his resignation but it was damning to give it to a classic indolent clueless ‘househand’ as is Lynn Swann.
