USC Basketball Star Roy Irvin Passes Away

I just happened to write about former USC basketball player Roy Irvin and his grandson, Clay Irvin, this morning and USC announced that Roy passed away Sunday. He was 86.

Irvin, a 6-foot-5 center, was a third-team All-American in 1954 when he led the Trojans to the Final Four. He came to USC after playing at Montebello High School and Fullerton College. Irvin was a 3-year (1953-55) lettermanand set USC career records for rebounds (768) and rebounding average (9.1).

Those still rank eighth and seventh best, respectively.  He was USC’s co-captain as a 1955 senior, leading the team in rebounding (12.4) while averaging 13.2 points.  He twice won USC’s Most Improved Player Award (1953-54).
