USC’s wide receivers had a big scrimmage and a good day at Tuesday’s practice.
But it’s safe to say the defensive secondary is not scaring anyone. Especially when you consider the defense is supposed to be ahead of the offense during the first 7-10 days of any training camp.
There have been moments here-or-there when Olaijah Griffin or Talanoa Hufanga intercepts a pass. But overall the secondary’s been a sore spot. It’s been a weakness for several years.
And it remains to be seen if secondary coach Greg Burns is the right person for the job.
During Tuesday’s practice, the first-team secondary was Isaac Taylor-Stuart, Chris Steele, Chase Williams, Isaiah Pola-Mao and Talanoa Hufanga.
That’s a pretty inexperienced group. And only Pola-Mao and Hufanga have enough game experience to really say what they will do in a game.
With temps in the upper 70’s-mid 80’s should be a great day, wonder if scottie will finally attend and get real time info for his wonderful blog.. hahahahaha

Lots of young talent in the secondary and lots of experienced talent at WR. Good problems to have.

True, 67. Our DB’s will grow up by end of season (and everybody’s gonna have trouble with our receivers).

Sadly, both are so poorly coached that the DB’s won’t get better and the WR’s will probably get worse

IMO other teams are salivating over playing our DB’s……for good reason…….probably 10 points per game to the negative……depending how good the QB we play is…….Next year…totally different picture…..we’ll have the legend of doom with shutdown corners on BOTH sides.

Fred —You’re right about our DB’s costing us something like 10 points for a while. But I bet they come around a little faster than you think. I don’t think teams will be salivating over playing against them by the last third of the season. [It would be nice if the D-Line could help them out with some sacks in the meantime]…..

Love the talent at DB- ITS, Olaijah, Chris Steele, Johnson, Hufanga, Pola- Mola, etc, but in the words of the great basketball analyst Al McGuire, “The best thing about a Freshman is that they become Sophomores.” These guys just need experience (I know that not all of them are Froshes) and there will be growing. But make no mistake, these guys will BE FORMIDABLE. Going up against Pittman, Aman- Ra, TV, Williams, Velus, Drake, Munir, and with Ford and Bru waiting in the wings, these guys will be battle tested to say the least.
