USC Morning Buzz: Will Helton Rock The Boat?

A couple USC coaches told me last week not to be surprised if Clay Helton made freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis No. 2 on the depth chart.

Slovis had a good practice Tuesday after a rocky scrimmage Saturday but has potential.

The question for me is whether Helton would rock the position by actually making his oldest quarterbacks (Jack Sears, Matt Fink) the last choices?

Neither would probably be thrilled although I’m not sure why Fink is still around since he already graduated. Sears is in a different spot. He doesn’t graduate until December.

Helton seems to avoid upsetting players, unless it is his stubborn devotion to JT Daniels and Toa Lobendahn, so making Slovis No. 2 might be against his character. But people are talking about it at USC.

  • Fresno State tailback Jordan Mims, who rushed for 436 yards and had 286 yards receiving last season, will miss the 2019 season with because of foot/ankle injuries.
  • USC beat a Lithuania select team, 105-83, in Paris. Onyeka Okongwu scored 22 points.

  1. Fresno State doesn’t need their top rusher from last season to beat USC, because they easily defeated UCLA, and Arizona State without him . And btw, didn’t the Trojans lose to both of those schools? 😂😂😂😂😂

    1. Fan Boy — Fresno State has only ONE thing going for them: Superior Head Coaching. They’ve lost their starting quarterback, they’ve lost their best receivers and their 0-line is actually worse than ours (and that’s bad).
We should easily beat Fresno at home — if we can’t, the season is officially over….

      1. Fresno State’s D and DC is the thing USC shold be worried about. They’ve been an impressive group under this DC.

      2. marvienna —You’re right —other than their shi**y linebackers, Fresno State’s defense is to be feared. Our O-line will face a huge test against the Fresno D-line—-and our receivers better expect to get roughed up by their DB’s….

      3. PJM —Hopefully none of our backs will have to break the line of scrimmage running the ball —- spring and fall practice suggests that they’ll be delivering tokenistic blocks and then breaking off for short passes. Interestingly, Dan Weber started to let the cat outta the bag and then caught himself, saying “I like that our backs are being used in a different way…. they…..well, I shouldn’t give anything away but they will be used in a different way.”

    2. The bottom line remains the same. The Trojans are soft in the trenches on both sides of the ball. This all started (on offense) with Sark moving away from the pro style offense. Our running backs have no momentum when theyreceive the handoff from a stand still formation (unlike the I formation). It’s as simple and maddening as that. I’ve never understood the logic of “everyone else is doing it.” And don’t give me the primmadonna excuse of having to run spread because that’s what’s being run in high school.

  2. The whole quote from D Weber on Saturday….
“*** Hard to imagine that a guy can go 20 of 22 passing for 159 yards with several nice scrambles, a nice deep ball and not be No. 1 on the QB list for Saturday but that’s how it works with this offense. Jack Sears did all that. But Matt Fink was darn near perfect. And JT Daniels was JT, throwing for four or five TDs, hitting them short and long for 192 or 242 yards depending on whether there was or wasn’t a sack on one deep TD throw.”

Not quite the way tbone the trollboy posted it..real surprising that he’d be less than honest??

    1. Pudly —The thing that has to worry us is the fact J. T. —with all the starts he got last year —isn’t running away with this quarterback competition. Sears and Fink are playing every bit as well as Daniels. And Slovis looks like he has the biggest upside of all. For the team’s sake it would be nice if there were a clear trigger man — but instead there is serious controversy over who should start. A really top quarterback (which is what I thought J. T. would be this year) would have proven himself by now. J. T. is doing just the opposite. And it won’t do to say that ‘it’s wonderful to have 4 quarterbacks’ —-somebody has to start and the team has to really believe in that guy. I also don’t like the fact that Dan Weber has mentioned twice that receivers are dropping balls that J. T. puts right between the numbers. That’s not a good sign.

      1. The only serious controversy is on this blog, everyone else who attends practice pretty much agrees on the outcome. I’m good with whoever comes out on top, but people I trust at different sites pretty much are and have been saying the same thing.

      2. The balls dropped yesterday were mostly by walkons with one exception. Does it matter who he’s throwing to and who’s covering them?? Never here about that here. Wonder why?

The only person you should trust is your boy toy. Just admit that you, like Helton, have a huge investment in JT Daniels.

      4. Pudly –I say it’s still J. T.’s job to lose —but I wish he looked better in the short clips we’ve seen on YouTube. Maybe he’s not used to the faster pace —but he seems to be a bit off even on the short stuff. That could kill us against Utah and Washington. No matter how you cut it, he’s not playing like a world beater —maybe that why a conservative publication like Lindy’s Sports actually named Sears as the starting quarterback for USC’s 2019 team. [I’ve never seen Lindy’s demote a starter before when they’re projecting the season’s line-up—they just don’t take that chance for credibility’s sake]….

      5. Pudly —I’m a huge J. T. fan but the reality is he hasn’t done enough in fall camp to make Lindy’s prediction look dumb. I’m hoping he tears it up on Saturday…

    2. Thanks Pudly. SW will twist anything to fit his agenda. He’s like a fanatical politician and would rather see the demise of the country than see a party succeed.

      1. Puddly,
You’re wrong, again. Daniels will not finish the season and you will be relegated to the jailhouse snitch that you truly are.

Your boy, Helton, finally gets put down after blowout losses to BYU, Washington and Utah. I don’t want it to happen but the “truth” does hurt. SC Will be manhandled in the trenches during all three of those games. Furthermore, JT Daniels most likely will be knocked out of one of those games because he can’t elude the rush with his Frankenstein boots.

FYI, Helton referred you to be cast in the role of Julian in the 2019 remake of the film, Less than Zero.

What are you talking about? “Internet bullying”, “intimidation.” You just summed up the entire pathetically soft state of the program in that one sentence. Are you kidding me? I suggest you retreat to your “safe space.”

    What an embarrassment.
