If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

USC will practice at the Coliseum tonight, probably in tennis shoes again, as it prepares for Saturday’s scrimmage.

These are usually the dog days of training camp but with days off and no two-a-days, this has been a pretty comfortable two weeks for the players.

  • Linebacker Solomon Tuliaupupu was reportedly in the hospital Thursday. Was he having surgery on his sore foot? Tuliaupupu redshirted last season because of injury, barely practiced in the spring and did not practice in training camp. Naturally, Clay Helton did not mention it.
  • I hear new USC president Carol Folt has completely redecorated her office with white walls and lots of natural light. Former president Max Nikias was known for going over-the-top when it came to decorating an office or designing a building, such as his love of spires.

Nikias has a nice new office in the Tutor Center across from Bovard. I hear the space was previously used by Graduate Student Government. I hope they didn’t get kicked out of their space for Nikias.

  • Today’s Los Angeles Times confirmed what I wrote Wednesday about wide receiver Bru McCoy: He has had fevers for seven weeks and has seen several specialists, who have not yet identified exactly what ails him.
  • Elex Michaelson, a co-anchor of the Channel 11 news at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and a USC graduate, covered the Coliseum ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday. Michaelson said he was unexpectedly hit in the left eye by confetti and for awhile he could not see. Doctors said he will need days of “intense drops and care to get better.”
  • Jack Del Rio, who recently attended two USC practices, has become an NFL analyst for ESPN.
  • Two weeks ago, I relayed a story involving former USC QB Vince Evans, who played in 1975 and 1976.

There were bumper stickers made that said, “Save USC Football: Shoot Vince Evans.”

Evans, who is African-American, received at least one death threat prior to the 1976 USC-UCLA game but ignored it.

‘There is obviously still some racism,” he said prior to the Crosstown Rivalry. “Even if I threw nine touchdown passes in a game there’d be a percentage of people who would be yelling for Rob Hertel (the back-up quarterback).”

Evans had a 36-yard TD run in the Trojans’ 24-14 victory over UCLA at the Coliseum.

“That was one of the most deserving things I’ve seen in sport,” USC coach John Robinson said after the game.

“I wanted to come back and show people I could do the job competently,” Evans said.

  • Did you know actor Kent McCord, best known for the TV show, “Adam-12” went to USC to play football in 1961?

McCord became a close friend of actor Ricky Nelson while at USC, which led to a regular role on the TV show, “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.”

McCord’s USC stint was short. He transferred to Utah in 1962 and then became an actor.

      1. start what , the road to ruin as defenses dump him ,rush him, intercept him…that ‘O’ line would have to improve by 80% compared to last yr…or receivers improve by 80% to get open …maybe both…

  1. I always admired Vince Evans at q/b for SC…he was a leader.
SC night practices makes sense, since most games will be at night, no network wants their pathetic games at prime time…

  2. I think it’s fantastic Bozo Helton continues to have a Country Club environment during training camp. Because he’s showing everyone that he’s still an idiot, and is picking up where he left off last season. Btw, did anybody watch Lynn Swann field questions from the press the other day ? He appeared to be on a short fuse with Helton, and said he has everything he needs to succeed this season … Uh Oh! I smell a mid season firing 😂😂😂

      1. You actually would be wanting his running mate George Atkinson (who was the primary Raiders abuser of Swann, as well chronicled in multiple documentaries, and the lawsuit that was filed against “the criminal element”)…

And still more likely to cover an opponent’s receiver without drawing an interference penalty…
One thing for sure – would be nice to see one of our many highly recruited DBs be able to apply a little of that Wood Haye’s taught “If they come into your area hit them so hard it knocks a snot bubble out of them” mindset…

      3. James —I vote for the Hayes coverage mode, too —- it’ll prevent 100% of T.D’s (and only get called 50% of the time)…….

      4. Wish Biggie would have received better coaching during his time – think he could have (and maybe will in the NFL) played like that … but that was then … guess we’ll see how it goes with Big Bear’s addition to the staff …

    1. Lynn Swann is too difficult to read, he comes across like he’s on the J-O-B, but his actions say something else. The upcoming season will define the whole athletic department, and especially Clay Helton, so we’lI see .

  3. Well well well, seems the latest scandal that is about to hit USC will involve the Securities & Exchange Commission.

    Stay tuned.

      1. Come, come, MG, what’s SUCCX w/o a weekly or monthly scandal.

IMHO MG, there is no greater bozo scandal than the fact that Nicky Squid is not only still employed by SUCCX, but an honored, lifetime member of the bozo BOT.

Who says gross, criminal malfeasance doesn’t pay.

      2. Dear Owns — Why not allow Max a chance to reed himself? He didn’t kick anybody out of their offices the way Scott suggested—in fact, he’s SHARING his new Tutor Center office with the reps of the Graduate Student Government right now! A friend of mine saw them all hanging out together in t-shirts and cargo shorts discussing Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, eating pizza and sharing a giant coke.
Student Government Prez: “I hear Tarantino’s thinking of making a movie about your involvement in multiple scams…”
Max: “No way! That would be so cool! Any idea who’s playing me?”
Student Government Treasurer: “I heard it was going to be Jack Black.”
        Max: “No way!! Pinch me!”

  4. To anyone interested…when Wolf originally posted the story about Vince Evans we examined it on the board to a good degree…

If you want to just read one (contemporaneous, no less) article about it, go here (bonus: recapitulates thrashing of a really, really good UCLA team):

    https://www.si.com/vault/1976/11/29/628176/usc-is-right-on-pitch

(and for those like me who are terminally infected with USC nostalgia – the 1976 team, the one Wolf put the picture up of earlier this week, was really, really great…one bad night of being mentally unprepared away from a national title…and they were good everywhere – Marvin Powell on the offensive line…Gary Jeter on the defensive line…Rod Martin and Clay Mattews at linebacker…Dennis Thurman in the defensive backfield…William Gay at tight end who went on to be a starting defensive lineman with the Lions in the NFL…Vince Evans at QB with of course Ricky Bell, Mosi Tatupu, and Charles White at running back – a great team that thrashed a really great Michigan team in the Rose Bowl).

  5. Shocking! the prejudice shown to their own by trOXans….(against Evans)

recent on-campus poll showed 71% of trOXans favored Trump.

    #Sad!

    1. Oh Bucket, so how is the “Queen?” You sure picked a loser with your call on Hillary. Did you like the picture of Bill in high heels? Right down your alley huh? Question is, how did Hillary get to Epstein? Who is your pick for 2020? Probably Pocahontas right? Or maybe Mayor Pete with his peculiar lifestyle. How about Beto? Do you still feel “the Bern?” so much fun talking politics with you.

  6. Memo to: Mikey Limp

2020 is fast approaching and those who laugh last, laugh best, longer and louder.

There are 18 states that have passed recent legislation that requires Federal, State, and local office candidates MUST file prior 5 years of Income Tax records to get on the 2020 18 state ballots.

Now I know MG will correct me if I’m wrong but to overturn those 18 state ballot laws Biggi T would/might have to file suit in the 18 individual states to challenge their ballot law legislation.

BTW, many of those 18 states reside in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit jurisdiction – D’oh!

Political stunts – even if hitched to a legitimate purpose – are just the futile progeny of the failed age of “states rights” during the late 18th and 19th century (see e.g. John C. Calhoun and nullification)…
Enough of that for the moment…
You’re at your finest when riffing on Nicky Squid – I never cease to be amused by those posts…
