JT Daniels Named Starting Quarterback

To no one’s surprise, Clay Helton said tonight that JT Daniels is the starting QB.

But Helton probably surprised some people and named freshman Kedon Slovis the backup quarterback. Matt Fink was named No. 3 and Jack Sears No. 4.

So Helton is going to put Slovis into a game if/when Daniels gets hurt? And two guys with game experience are going to be on the sideline?

I bet Stanford would like that scenario.

I have my doubts about that. But I’m pretty sure Daniels, who cannot take a hit, will be departing a game at some point. And then the brain trust will have to step in.

Sears will not transfer until after the season because he gets his degree in December. Fink already tried transferring and came running back to USC.

    1. For the longest time was under the misconception that the “USC” in the title; “inside USC” referred to University of Southern California . Now, however I have just confirmed the those letters stand for “Unabashed Snarky Cunt”
I hope the L.A. P.D. doesn’t have to frisk Scott at a home game, his continuous loathing of all things SC football is borderline psychotic. It is the one thing that has separated Scott from employment after all of these years. It started out as a refreshing side of the news because it didn’t follow the Kool-Aid of most reporting. However playing devil’s advocate all the time makes one’s soul shrivel. Scott could go to a steak house and blame the taste of his meat on artificial turf.
And tomorrow I will look in to see if people agree. I only come here for the banter and maybe to be called a level layer dip eating snob. (Tried some of that dip the other day, did you know there are beans in that stuff? -Caused a smog alert over my house)

      1. I think we all get your angle Steve but who here has anything but contempt for what the university has shrunk into these past 9 years? Nikias picking Haden with no experience that was glaringly evident in his (Haden) claim he had a ‘hunch’ about Sarkisian as his choice for head coach…compounded by Haden bringing Singer and ‘festive’ Heinel….using his ‘health’ to ‘leave’ as the Mayr Foundation scandal was about to ‘pop out’……replaced by an even worse fool (Swann) who blindly gives a clown a full 5 year extension…neither Haden and Swann wanted to earn their money. A lecherous gynecologist allowed to run rampant for 20 years with constant complaints thrown to the wind. A head of the medical school screwing a 19 yr old and providing her and her bother with drugs and allowed himself to be filmed indulging in such….a president forced to ‘retire’ and the interim ‘chancellor’ decides to sack the head of the business school. The school the focus nationally of this ‘doppleganger’ of ‘Epstein’ – ‘Rickie Singer’ who as recently as October 2018 still moving the ‘side entrances’ but esp. to USC.

What is there to be happy about? All most of us have was the football team and Helton is the face of it…..he’s (Clay Helton) a nice guy but without a doubt the worst head coach of any upper-tier program in FBS.

I honestly never read any articles about USC football and I mean any until this clown is gone and I’ll bet I’m not alone.

      2. I think it’s obvious Mr. Weller that you blame Wolf for the ugly demise of the SUCCX FB program. What I don’t understand is WHY?!

The BOT employed Nicky Squid, not Wolf. Nicky Squid allowed “good Fundraiser” to indicate excellent employee regardless of the vile, illegal habits of those excellent employees.

Wolf didn’t give the finger to the NCAA, Emperor Garrett did; Scott didn’t sanction SUCCX FB, the NCAA did.

Furthermore, Wolf didn’t hire St Pat as the new AD, Nicky Squid and the BOT did. Scott didn’t fire Kiffy Goat on the LAX tarmac, St. Pat did.

Wolf didn’t stab Coach O in the back, St Pat did. Wolf had zero input to St Pat’s sweet negotiation to pay UDUb a mega-premium to hire their Alky FBHC that U-Dub would have paid St. Pat to take; No, there again, St. Pat did.

St. Pat the AD was replaced by Lynn Swann, not by Wolf, but by Nicky Squid and the eminent bozo BOT, etc, etc, etc.

Mr. Weller, I could go on and on provide more evidence Scott Wolf has exactly zero responsibility for the demise of the SUCCX FB program.

What Mr. Wolf actually did was report the demise of the SUCCX FB program; that ugly truth can’t be sugar-coated or ignored.

    2. I like to read Wolfies forum. He is a USC beat writer so he probably has a lot of sources that I don’t have. My only problem with Wolf is that I’m never sure that I can trust what he says. Is he saying it because it’s true(and a lot of what he says is true….sometimes things that nobody else will say) or is he saying it because he hates SC. I’m never really sure. For a guy who graduated from SC, he’s a definite USC hater.

that Sears told Helton he would transfer if not named the starter after his fall performance and thats the reason he is #4 on the depth chart…I don’t get premium so I cannot confirm but that is what has been posted on the USCFootball.Com board…if Sears leaves I suppose that will confirm it.

      3. the reason Sears is #4 is that if he was #2 the team might not have given 100% for JT. They would just figure that a loss or two would result in Sears taking charge. This was a political move by Helton to force leadership on JT, but leadership cant be given, it has to be earned, and JT does not have it. Helton’s follies continue to damage the program.

    3. Maybe it was the 8 INT’s thrown by J.T. Daniels compared to the one INT thrown by Jack Sears in Fall Practice that clinched the starting job for J.T. (1 – 5 In His Last 6 Games) Daniels.

      Helton & Daniels together again. It’s going to be a repeat of last years 5 – 7 (4 – 5 PAC 12 Conference) record…if they’re lucky.

  1. Sadly most clowns who like SW would wish for a terrible outing for JT just so they can be right. That’s the sick twisted part of it. Misery needs conlany but also luck in predicting the sky will fall, so they can make sure to remind anyone who listens.

    1. The ragging on J. T. will really lessen if he stands up to a very good Fresno State d-line and delivers lots of strikes, throws for a TD at least once a quarter and doesn’t throw any dumb interceptions (tipped balls don’t count)…..

      1. Unfortunately that “if” has the ring of the “if” the Spartans supposedly jibed to Alexander the Great…then again, Alexander was so busy he didn’t take them up on it…maybe we can strike a similar deal with our opponents (so long as the current regime remains in place)? It could be our equivalent to the traditional SEC “FCS” or “I-AA” festival each fall? Just taking a step…or 11…further…

      2. James — Scott is having an inordinate amount of fun over the selection of Daniels. The guy really is brilliant. All summer he told people it would be horrible, “most horrible” (a little Hamlet to match your Alexander the Great) if Daniels was selected QB. Now that the inevitable has happened, folks are going into crisis mode. And Scott is smiling his Wolf smile. The truth is Daniels is the best of a pretty good lot. He’ll underthrow some balls and take some sacks —-but he’ll complete close to 70% of his passes and hook up with Pittman on plenty of long TD’s. We’ll be ok.

Absolutely agree as to the Smiling Wolf (What large teeth you have!)…

Not so much where JT is concerned (I know you’re more informed and have analyzed it more, and you’ve made some really insightful points…but I just don’t see the necessary fit of skills to system, and, at a many miles to the Moon remove, question what I have gleaned of the character)…but as we’ve (and I hope our brethren here can keep it together enough to mostly observe) politely (dare I say it, with some modicum of class? Now I go to far…) discussed, if not debated, it will soon be settled where it matters, and we’ll live with the results, whatever they may be…

  7. Whether the decision was the right one remains to be seen, but it did seem preordained. Naming Slovis #2 is interesting in that it gives you a nice change of pace if you want to use it. I don’t think you use Slovis only in the case of an emergency, but also as a way to keep teams off balance. If teams are going to make game plans for JT, those plans have to change to some degree for Slovis. Knowing he’s available makes it harder for opposing coaches to game plan to begin with. This is Helton/Harrell zigging when I thought they would zag. Interesting choice, let’s see it…

    1. Nice to see you, Clay.
I’ll tell you one problem avoided today: Helton won’t ever again hear anybody telling him that Sears looked good in clean-up. Sears is now buried so deep he’ll never see the light of day….

      1. Hey MG. You have to believe that part of the calculus in naming Slovis #2 involves an attempt to avoid a recurring QB controversy throughout the year. In fact, I think that probably had more to do with it than the reasons I’m suggesting.

      2. That remains to be seen…even if the “Captain” (Benteen, as beaten to death) goes down with the ship (in this case, not comprehending that ships can sink, let alone that it has been in the process of since he stepped on-board)…

Speaking of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups…most years I only eat them during football season on the Halloween weekend (to include the ****ing 2008 debacle in Corvallis)…but I think this year I will buy a few more bags to spread throughout the season…think we’re going to need something to stimulate those pleasure sensors other than what will be on the screen…

  8. If Sears and Fink have any aspirations to play in the League, they will hang through the season, then apply for the draft, if not, then suffer through the season and leave to start their careers.
After today’s announcement, I wonder what Bryce Young and his parents thoughts are…maybe, do I join this Clown Circus or look elsewhere?

  9. JT is the best QB on the roster. That’s why he’s won the job two years in a row. Having Sears as #4 is just clearing the way for a significantly better dual threat coming in next year. Sears will transfer, but stop with the Darnold comparisons. Sears can’t throw on the run, and he runs too much. He tucks and runs at first sign of play breaking down. That bothered Harrell from the get go. Fink is emergency plan.

  10. USC’s Board of Trustees cannot be so incompetent that they would hire an Athletic Director and head football coach who are clearly in over their head and have no clue what the hell they’re doing and let them continue to embarrass the university by running the Trojan football program into the ground.

No group of people can be that stupid.

There’s only one reason USC would keep Lynn Swann and Clay Helton around and that’s to make sure that C.L. Max Nikias plan to De-Emphasize Trojan football stays in effect.

USC has no intention of wanting to see its football program brought back to prominence. USC wouldn’t keep Swann and Helton around unless the long-term plan was for USC football to be mediocre.

would no doubt conclude your post was ‘conspiracy theory material’
However it does possess keen logic, of course only for those who have come out from under the Cardinal & Gold ether, of which, those will forego

As USC no longer being the only show in town, for those days, I’m afraid are over.

  14. Clay Helton is going to start J.T. Daniels who went 1 – 5 in his last 6 games and who couldn’t separate himself from the other three QB’s during Spring and Fall practice.

No hint of marked improvement for J.T. Daniels with an entire season as a starter under his belt.

Daniels is given the most reps in practice, not to mention the fact that Helton always makes sure that Daniels has the first string offense to practice with. Helton also having to overrule referees and rig plays in order to try and make Daniels look better.

Daniels threw 9 INT’s in about 6 days of practice, 2 went for pick 6’s. Daniels was going up against 2nd and 3rd string DB’s during the first few days of Fall practice and couldn’t take advantage enough to separate himself from the other QB’s.

This is how incompetent Clay Helton is and why it’s easy to see that he has no clue what he’s doing and why he has no business coaching.

USC is really fucked up to allow this idiot Clay Helton to basically waste the players time and effort. Helton has never shown that he can develop talent. The Trojan players learn nothing from Helton or his staff.

What a shame and embarrassment Trojan football has become.

  15. J.T. Daniels lost 4 of his last 5 starts. The only win was against a (2-10) Oregon State team. Even then he only had 1 TD against them.

    1. His last 5 games he had 7 Td’s 5 Int’s

    2. Against the top 4 teams he played against in 2018
    (Texas, Stanford, Utah, ND) 2 TD’s 5 Int’s

    3. Lost to Cal at Home for the first time in ? Threw a pick late in that game that sealed the deal.
    4. Lost to both Rivals UCLA and ND

JT Daniels own words he said last years offense was not the issue it was poor execution. So I’ll take him at his word and agree with him.
