USC Notes: Working Weekend

Lynn Swann is scheduled to appear at the USC athletes’ “Welcome Back Barbecue” this weekend. Darn work getting in the way of a potential full day of golf.

  • Defensive back Clark Phillips of La Habra, who committed to Ohio State last month but wasn’t even offered by USC until March, had two interceptions against Upland last night.
  • Former USC punter Reid Budrovich has been awarded a $9,000 Pac-12 post-graduate scholarship.
  • Remember last month when former USC football staffer Rick Courtright filed a lawsuit that alleged undergraduate students were paid to pretend to be football graduate assistants to take online classes?

Well, an L.A. Superior Court judge ruled the case will go to arbitration, which is what USC wanted.

Courtright alleged defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast paid at least one of the students who pretended to be a graduate assistant.

  1. Beats reading the beat reporters of the Times and Daily News/Register and the spin per the mess the program is. Waiting for Plaschke to rip Helton another one and Swann too because no other columnists will say anything.

    1. I would rather read T.J. Simmers his writing was usually right on. I miss Michael Lev from the Register, but he’s moved to s better market because the Register had money troubles. What can I say?

  2. Q: Who gave Helton, the coach who ruined the Trojan culture and player development with nepotism, cronyism and inability to adjust at half time of games, complete license to shift to the Air Raid scheme? Was there a poll of alumni players? No. If I wanted to watch Air Raid (touch football) I would watch Washington State. Who gave Helton complete license to change the SC brand of football?
    A: Helton

  3. …And —worse yet —he’s not exactly changing the USC brand of football for free….

  4. You wonder what he didn’t like about Clark Phillips. These coaches are not the greatest recruiters in the world. There is no reason SC should be rated 60th in recruiting. This is SC, not Weber State!

  5. Has anyone ever heard a recruit say he wanted to play football for USC so he could be under the direct tutelage of Clay Helton or any specific coach on Helton’s staff?

    LOL!

The obvious answer to that question…is no.

    1. I’ve heard hundreds of recruits say that they began playing football because they were inspired by Coach Clay Helton…..
