USC Might Fire Clay Helton . . . Or It Might Not

Remember when looking at the odds for Clay Helton to be fired (11/2) it assumes USC has a normal athletic director.

But Lynn Swann is so dysfunctional that anything is possible. He might do nothing. He might do something. He has no experience hiring a football coach.

This is the problem with having an athletic director that does not know what he is doing.

  • USC moved its Monday night radio show from The Lab pub on Figueroa St. to Rock & Reilly’s pub in the University Village. Maybe they didn’t want the radio show drowned out by police and fire dept. sirens blaring in the background like they always did at The Lab.

  1. “We acknowledge and understand our deficiencies in areas that include culture, discipline, schemes, personnel, and staff.” – Lynn Swann

    1. and apparently they also like those ’cause they have been practiced during the hellton dynasty of disaster…nothing has changed except the names of a few

  2. Better for all if Swann gets sacked first….then Helton knows it’s over and so do all of us. Swann first and finally some light instead of the darkness that has been with us since 2010.

    1. Michael — It’s worse than you think. Scott’s success at piling up hits for invented controversies is having a negative effect on other sites —have you noticed that Reign of Troy is now Devil’s Rain of Troy?

      1. not really …
they all think SC has a winning season… anywhere from I think it was from 10-2 to 7-5 and a bowl game of course…what did you read to post your comment?

  3. Lynn Swann will look like a complete idiot/fool this weekend, because the game ain’t gonna be pretty. And I promise you, he already has his spin on paper, because he knows the product on the field is mid level football. I’ll be cheering for Fresno State to win big, but only because I want the nightmare to finally be over.

      1. Losing to Fresno State won’t end the nightmare. It will make it worse, because that won’t lead to Helton getting fired.

Does anybody know how many years Swann has left on his contract?

      2. 67— I don’t know the specific answer to your question [re the length of Swann’s contract] —- but maybe this info will prove helpful: Most contracts can be voided for violation of commonly recognized laws of human decency…..

      3. Ha! Human decency! That’s the ticket! I think that we honestly have a winner there! Would double thumbs up if I could. (And after today’s Oklahoma opioid judgement, I would think anything is possible?)

      4. 67 —It’s funny that we see manufacturer liability for opioid death and USC’s need to revoke Swann’s contract as legally & logically linked…..

      6. MG-
In some saner part of the multiverse we might be able to pool enough votes to file a fan shareholder derivative suit…but in this one, we’re limited to the advice of political economists: vote with your feet (ie your pocketbook…thereby their pocketbook).

      Amen!

And the nationally televised audience seeing a half empty Coliseum should also help in showing Swann and Helton the door.

      1. I hope it is a thumping at an away game so we can look at another embarrassing tarmac firing…which I think set a new low for SC…let’s have another one just for fun.

  4. In hiring Folt, SC has kept to the standard that has recently settled in, and that is the Adm. does not care about sports, much alone football. If they had hired someone that is familiar with the great USC football history, Swann would have been let go immediately. All we can do is hope and pray that no one shows up the game. The fans can get Swann fired by not showing up. If SC loses concession revenue, merchandise revenue, parking, and alcohol sales, then they will notice. That is the only way Swann gets fired now.

    1. That’s exactly what I was suggesting to MG above (voting with feet/pocketbook)…great point…loss of revenue and embarrassment of an empty stadium…

      1. James —Although I loved the line about voting with your pocketbook (because of it’s impact on THEIR pocketbook), I’d hate to punish (and that’s what it would amount to) a bunch of kids who have possibly turned themselves —in spite of Helton—into a football team. If they beat Fresno State 34 -17 can we all return to the Coliseum?

      2. You know I’m on record as sharing that sentiment where the current group of players is concerned….

But continuing to buy what your being sold (a now local resident retired music star in one of his final lyrical pieces wrote “…believe in what we’re told, blind man in the market, buying what we’re sold…”)…

You are a smart, wise person…I know you know the answer to your question…

      3. To steal a line from “I Claudius” yet again: “Do any of us?”
Hard to balance the equities in cheering for the kids and hoping for necessary change that would have grave potential for impacting the lives of those same kids…
Which kind of brings us back to that final apocalyptic sequence with Kurtz and Willard, yes?

  5. I don’t know why but, there seems to be a pattern, that being, Swann is hired, no experience as an Athletic Director, then the extension of Helton’s contract, his record was average even with Sam. During the search for a new President two very capable candidates were found and discussed, then it seems out of nowhere Carol Folt is in the picture and hired.
There is NO emphasis on excellence in any of the hires!

She was headed out the door at North Carolina after the fractious acrimony regarding A statue, which didn’t satisfy many in the Administration.

Carol Folt has a successful resume in Biology but as an administrator had a kind of wish-washy, go along to get along, nothing bold kind of reputation.

I see this hire as similar to the Swann, Helton hires, employees that will follow the company line, Puppets!

I do believe that if Helton were to have another 5-7 season, it would be rationalized to some ‘new’ analogous comparison. Vis a vee Notre Dame.

There seems to be some sort of plan or strategy that is Directed from the BOT with Nikias’ fingerprints all over it.

The Alumni Association, Alums, Fans are up in arms about the diminished status of a great tradition and football legacy and current performance while those at the top are happy as Clams.

Something is not right in Camelot.
