USC Morning Buzz: What Was Missing Yesterday?

Did you notice one thing was missing in the below statement Jack Sears released to announce he would transfer?

He never thanked Clay Helton, Graham Harrell or any of the offensive coaches. And why would he?

He threw one interception in training camp and was made fourth string. He was even placed below Matt Fink, who left and then came back. The full statement is at the bottom.

And here’s my reaction to Helton’s insincere response:

    1. USC was by far the best football program. I don’t know why Haden didn’t appeal. The NCAA is about as corrupt of a U.S. public organization as exists today, and the SC sanctions will always be viewed as the greatest abuse of power by the NCAA.

      1. 67 —-In a sense Haden did appeal —but it was only to the NCAA (which laughed him outta town—when you take on the NCAA and appeal to the NCAA’s appeals board you’re just giving them a chance to say no again). Why didn’t Haden take the case out of the corrupt NCAA system? There are lots of answers —but it boils down to he just didn’t care enough to fight back….

      2. Here’s an interesting thread and a quick read on the basics of the “air raid”

    2. Hey Puds 76, did you get your stomach pumped from all of Clay Helton’s semen that you swallowed? And btw, has your wife’s mouth snapped back into place from my last visit, inquiring minds want to know?

    3. Hey Puds 76, is Clay Helton scheduled to drop by your house tonight, and make a deposit of semen inside your man-Vagina, or was that suppose to be after the Fresno State game?

  1. Gomer is just a lying POS of a person.

Gomer rigged the QB competition then he buried Sears on the depth chart to secure JT Chuck and Duck’s place as a starter.

Gomer can spout his faith, family, football BS, he can come off as a good Christian but he’s just a scumbag, and that seems to be what USC is all about these days, scumbags, and that’s sad.

    1. I have reluctantly come around to your opinion on Helton —-there’s just too much evidence in support of his utter insincerity—-it’s gotten to the point where it’s obvious he never says what’s on his mind (and local press let him get away with it cuz they’re scared to rock the boat). But the picture is not all black and white, karma. The USC football team and it’s coaching staff are not made up of nothing but “scumbags.” A lot of great kids will take the field this Saturday —and my guess is they’ll play their hearts out ….and win.

      1. Michael, A strong second that there are a lot of great kids on the team, like Austin Jackson:

Beyond Helton’s failure to make halftime adjustments and his choice of some of the coaching staff, I feel that where he really has failed is in terms of team preparation for some of the games. Execution is on the players, but they need leadership and mentoring to deliver their best.

Remember the ‘Bama game? I couldn’t tell if there was even one SC player on the field who looked like they wanted to be there. Part of that is on Helton and the coaching staff.

An enormous intangible on the part of Sam Darnold was his moxie and leadership. The team looked totally different, including the defense, after Sam began to start.

      2. Absolutely – go team, prove us doubters wrong, by all means…but to the extent you are not able to do so because of (and one strongly suspects that it will/would be 95% or more due to) poor coaching…our disapproval and enmity is not directed at you the players.

This most recent public relations (and I think on-field/team success ultimately) debacle…Helton increasingly comes off like John Hammond’s nephew in the second Jurassic Park movie (the one that Ian Malcom says “When you try to sound like Hammond it just comes off as a hustle…it’s not your fault…they say talent skips a generation…I’m sure your kids will be sharp as tacks…” to).

      3. ’67:

There was one, and only one, player I remember distinctly from the Bama game who both acted like he wanted to be there, and belonged there (ie the Bama players clearly acted with respect towards him) – Stevie T (people forget that while Sam was clearly the Fish That Saved Heltonburg, Stevie T. was the only thing that saved what was otherwise a really soft/porous defense)…

      4. James, yes, on the money. I had forgotten that.

Steveie T. played with heart that game. He was ready to play and he didn’t cave after it became obvious what the outcome would be.

      5. It’s hard to win when you have a phony in charge. And Helton is (or, more charitably, has become) a prize phony. Jury experience taught me never to listen to the words a person speaks —only to their tone. Helton is so easy to decode: He says the exact opposite of what he means. You can hear it in the sugary glibness of his tone. If he’s glad to see Tee go, he says he misses him already. If he did literally everything he could to drive Jack away, he says he loves him. The reason the team took off with Sam was that Sam just fricking loved football —the team responded to his genuineness and his honesty (in a sense, he replaced their head coach and rallied the team to win). This team needs on the field leadership cuz Helton —-tin horn dictator that he is —-won’t let Harrell provide it on the sidelines. Somebody on the field will have to make it happen….

      7. they can only play the way they were prepared by hellton and his subordinates…I quit calling them coaches ,they are just hellton subordinates.
and the prep was just like last yr …well you know it was not to beat tough/physical opponents…FRESNO ST BEAT TWO OPPONENTS HANDILY THAT BEAT SC one the big rivalry team in town that clobbered SC.
the only thing they,SC, have going for them is the best part of the bulldogs graduated.

  2. Yes, and people forget that Bama broke that game by throwing after having Stevie T. stuff their running game for the entire first quarter (he was the sort of immovable NG that great defenses usually have and that we’ve been lacking, other than him, a Utah product as we all know but it should be noted, since Mike Patterson…Jurrell Casey and Sedrick Ellis were if anything even more talented and disruptive, but they also were undisciplined at times).

    1. Anybody who wants to know what a football player looks like —not a 5 star prima donna , but a fricking football player —- need look no further than the videos of Tu’ikolovatu crying and hugging fellow players after the Rose Bowl victory…

      1. 100%+ agree…that’s why I always bring up Mike Patterson – he was EdO’s main man, the heart of those teams…if any of you have the extended version of the 2004 Rose Bowl/national championship DVD, the lead-in program has a great segment where Petros speaks to EdO…

I had high hopes for BKU, but of course that, for whatever reason, didn’t work out…if this defense is going to give the offense the chances it will need, someone in that defensive line group is going to have to become a Mike Patterson or Stevie T. (obviously a Leonard Williams, Jurrell Casey, or Sedrick Ellis wouldn’t be turned away at the door either!)…

    2. Bama broke the game after replacing Blake Barnett with a mobile Hurts. USC was putting pressure on Barnett who could not scramble.
I remember Marshall biting on a Hurts scramble to find an open receiver for a touchdown.

      1. Yes – that was the dam bursting play (but as I recall it was Adoree, not Biggie…either way, it was just another example of “who’s coaching these 5* recruits?”)…

      2. Yep. The play you referenced was actually the beginning of the end. USC was fighting back until Alabama got that cheap touchdown. The air went out after that.

      3. Just did a quick search and saw that you are correct – the first touchdown pass was against Biggie (there was a 71 yard wide open touchdown pass early in the second half – that must be the one I was remembering). It was a blown coverage I believe…

  3. “I told Coach Helton that I am available if the team needs me,” wrote Sears. Not sure what the kid can offer the team now, but it doesn’t sound as if he has hard feelings toward Coach.
