Discuss The USC-BYU Game

It’s 17-10 BYU as the defense gives up a 3rd-and-14 conversion.

Kedon Slovis throws another interception. Both interceptions, BYU had eight defenders back, which is how Washington defends Washington State’s Air Raid offense.

USC and BYU are tied, 7-7.

Kedon Slovis led the Trojans on a TD drive and threw his first career interception.

Will this be a high-scoring game?

Looks like BYU is testing some of Clancy Pendergast’s tendencies, trying a deep pass and then a fake reverse because his defenses overpursue.

The signs point to a USC victory. The Trojans are riding high after a big victory over Stanford. BYU has the nation’s worst rushing defense. And they were manhandled by Utah.

  • This will be Kedon Slovis‘ first road test. It would be shocking if BYU did not blitz but Stanford didn’t. This will also be USC’s first game against a QB who is not making his first college start.

With all that said, I’m going to pick an upset and say BYU wins, 31-27.

  • Josh Imatorbhebhe had 3 catches for 82 yards in one drive for Illinois. That’s more than he did in his entire USC career.

    1. According to sources, Jack Sears is spreading peanut butter on his crackers and looking at transfer options from the likes of Oklahoma and Alabama. Clay Helton called him 12 times but it went straight to voicemail.

In other news, JT Daniels’ family was at shakey’s pizza celebration the stink job Slovis is doing!

    1. They post notice that the game is ESPN news, but that is an obscure channel and not available on my TV. So the alternative is ESPN app which is also supposed carry the game. I downloaded the app, installed it but when I try the SC game I get the Pitt game WTF ? Mickey Mouse channel has screwed the pooch for all three games (Disney owns ABC and ABC owns ESPN.

      1. MG, on the play in which the BYU QB had about 30 seconds to throw, there were 3 SC defenders in the middle of the field, 10 yards from the line of scrimmage, nowhere near any back or receiver, just watching the QB.

        #WTF?

  3. We need fair refs is what we need. LDS refs will be elevated in the temple after this game. They have called so many bogus calls during this game and just looked the other way on that pass.

    1. What is your problem Steve? You don’t like their O-Line holding on every play? You don’t like the refs giving them an EXTRA fucking down to make a first down? That’s just the way it’s done in Utah….

      1. At first I thought they were going o”let them play” but at the end of the game they were calling our OL for holds but letting BYU hold for 5 seconds each play.

      1. MG, don’t be a lemon.

        Both sides were Ref. screwed.

        BYU deserved the win.

Imagine if you will MG, what the bozo offense would look like with BYU’s ZW at the helm.

Slovis reminded me of Norm Van Brocklin – a defense never had to worry about NVB scrambling downfield!

  5. Another Slovis Int cost the bozos the game.

Whoever called the Slovis O/T pass down the middle on 3rd and long should be fired on the tarmac.

The kid just cranked it hard as he could and it ricocheted off Pitman’s hand(s) into BYU’s hands.

The Clown U loss has got to sting.

    No excuses SUCCXsters.

    1. James, I think the offense could be ok. But the defense gave up 450 yards of offense to BYU – unacceptable performance.

Pendergast’s D seems totally lost every third play. I think he really has to be fired.

      2. I am still ok with Harrell’s offense, but I understand your point and respect it. Slovis made 2 particularly bad choices on two interceptions, including the one in overtime.

But this is a win if the D plays just halfway decent. No way BYU should score more than 21 in regulation against SC. I have no idea why Pendergast hasn’t been fired. Over the last two years, roughly half the games have been complete defensive nightmares where players literally have no idea what their assignment is.

I agree with what you’re saying about the defense wholeheartedly
But the offense is wrong also, and the whole notion was always wrong
USC should not be running a gimmick offense
USC should not be incapable of running against a BYU, ever
It goes to more than approach, it goes to attitude – the very soul of the program
Clearly, football has changed and there is no place for the Thundering Herd
But what they are doing is what a bottom feeder program does
What a team with inferior talent does
Petros didn’t say it explicitly, but strongly implied, and I agree entirely, that what it amounts to is a lazy, short-cutting approach
The type of talent USC has and can have even more of…all it requires is proper coaching…
You’re right he made a couple of bad throws…but he made not so great throws last week also that happened to work out…
USC should not be a 50/50 jump ball proposition
And if this happened in Provo…
And as much as we are looking forward to the Sooner Schooner tonight…
Just remember that’s what we looked like in South Bend two years ago, and will again this year….
        This staff must go…

      4. James, I don’t see it as a gimmick offense – some aspects of the spread are used by the Patriots, used by Oklahoma, and quite a bit used by Urban Meyer Florida.

But we are in complete agreement that Helton has to go. Just go. Right now. Happy to have the whole staff replaced.

At the time, I had hoped for Orgeron. But I never thought it would be this bad under Helton.

  7. I took it on the chin last week for the outburst (which as I pointed out involved a lot of 50/50 arcing heaves that great receivers made good…plus as Wolf pointed out Stanford playing overly timid)…

But anyone who defends the continuation of this abomination…

And the Arizona State win – I’ve mentioned for two weeks that people are sleeping on Herm’s team in the south…they don’t have as much talent, but they have talent…and a former NFL coach (for all of the Del Rio detractors…who once upon a time were Carroll detractors…and who never explained why Saban dipped his toe in the NFL waters and ran away fast)…

  10. Wow… Last week everyone thought Slovis could walk on water and this week no mention of his performance. Everything everyone is talking about could’ve happened and the team still won, but what couldn’t happen is that you give a good team 3 turnovers and gain none yourself. The freshman saw his first hostile environment and he choked. Plain and simple… Every interception was forced into double coverage when there were better options available. This is why you wanted the guy who got all of this stuff out of the way last year to be the starter. So all the people who were blaming Helton for not starting Slovis over JT need another reason to blame him. Just as you praised and gave the kid credit last week, you have to give him the blame this week. Welcome to the wonderful world of big time quarterbacking, kid.

    1. They stopped running the offense in the 2nd half because they couldn’t trust the kid to make the right decisions. As soon as they went back to passing more, he gave it up again.

Stepp looked really good, aside from the one fumble (that SC recovered).

      1. I agree, MG…my comment was more tongue-in-cheek…I want Helton to throw others under the bus, to continue to try and deflect his ineptness…but I doubt Helton gets Kiffined tonight…and I know he’s not he’s not going to dump the best DC in college FB, a special teams guru, or an OL savant…. it sucks rooting against the Trojans—-I’ve pulled for them for over 50 years….but, I want Helton fired—ASAP… if Utah beats them by 40, UW—I live in Seattle and loathe the dawgs—beats them by 30–that should be enough…I don’t know if I can root for the Catholics——but, if that’s what it takes…
