USC Notes: Is Graham Harrell Too Good To Talk?

Where does Graham Harrell get off ducking the media after the BYU game?

Does he think he is still at North Texas or Texas Tech? Is is he too good to explain himself after a shoddy offensive performance? It’s inexcusable for a highly paid offensive coordinator to avoid the media after a 12:30 p.m. PT game. Remember, the media is the way the fans get to hear the excuses of the coaches.

  • Reggie Bush and the Fox crew will be at the Coliseum on Friday night for the Utah game. This makes Bush’s first return to a USC game since NCAA sanctions. He is allowed to visit for “work purposes.”
  • The USC-Washington game will kick off at 12:30 p.m. and be on Fox Network.

      1. 67 –Very Funny (but I think the Washington fans know we have no Plan B for the 2019 season)…..

      2. 67 —I know this sounds depressing — but I don’t think any of the coaches- in -waiting could handle substitutions, time outs, half time, pregame, etc.

      3. Michael, you are absolutely correct. But I still think that Colbert would be better than Helton. Colbert is still no way an HC. But then again, neither is Helton.

      4. 67 — I am a huge Scott fan but I’m seriously wondering why Scott hasn’t at least considered the possibility that Harrell COULDN’T talk to the press directly after the game cuz he needed to talk to high priced contract attorneys…..

  1. Scottie, why do you believe Bozo Helton when he says that Harrell called all the plays? Helton has lied to the press and the fan base his entire USC head coaching career. Examples – We’re going to be a power running football team. We’re going to have an open QB competition. We are going to simplify the defense. I can go on and on…

    1. Yes, Helton hung out Harrell to dry when Helton said “Graham ULTIMATELY calls the plays.”

Helton tried to hide the fact that he “suggested” plays in the second half. Harrell really had no choice but to call what Helton wanted to call.

      1. karma — speaking of smack downs, Harrell needs to be considering that as an option for dealing with Helton…..

    2. There is no particular reason why Scott should start believing Helton now….except that it’s more fun to drag Harrell into this shit storm….

    2. That wheel route or whatever you caught from Matt Leinart was possibly the best toss/catch I’ve ever seen a USC quarterback make to his tailback!

      1. Let’s see somebody prove they can guard him 20 or more yards downfield one on one, out of the backfield? Not just in the flats, which I like also….

  2. Opie didn’t talk for one or more of the following reasons

    1. He couldn’t face the press after his shitty performance
    2. He was pissed that he wasn’t allowed to call the plays when things got tough
    3. He was pissed that his plays got changed by Gomer
    4. He’s pissed that his plays have to go through Gomer
    5. He didn’t want to say publicly that Gomer is calling all, some or a few plays

Harrell needs to be a man and bitch slap the hell outta Helton for placing all the blame for the crap offense vs. BYU at his feet…..

  3. So now the question is, did Harrell learn anything about how a team will stop an Air Raid offense? As an oc, you have to make adjustments during the game and at practice. Harrell, guess what you will see the same thing against Utah, Washington, and nd. You can go 3-0 or 0-3 depending on what you do. I will give you a hint, go back to the film department and look at late 60’s and early 70’s film. If you study the film very closely, you will see a fullback and a tailback. That #42 tailback named Ricky Bell sure reminds me of #30 Steeps. #29 reminds me of Tatupu. all you do is have the qb take a snap under center and he hands off to #30. Move five yards up and run the same play. Move the huddle up another 5 yards and run the same play on the other side. By the fourth quarter those 5 yards become 7 to 10 yard runs. In other words, RUN THE BALL you bonehead with power football. When you have three men on the dline, you run the ball. Basic football genius.

      1. paw-saw-duh-naw is right as you are ST 22 GG Frwy….Marcus Allen on a radio interview almost a year ago stated the offensive line loves a strong running attack as they keep pushing the defensive line back and it, as stated, starts out as 4 – 5 yds. but by the 4th qtr it’s 7+ yds. It totally demoralizes the defense esp. if their offense is all passing. The ‘3 and out’ exhaust the defense as they constantly have to go back out there.

I find myself repeating constantly “Nothing changes until Helton is gone.” Brings to mind what Cato the Censor ended every speech he gave “Carthage must be destroyed!”

  4. I want to hear what Harrell says. Helton said Harrell called a great game, he didn’t say he took the advice. Harrell was probably told to stand down. Either he thought Slovis was better than he was, or his orders were not sent to the team. It is a typical Helton move to bench the best weapon and play favorites. Occasionally I think the guy is point shaving because he literally prevents success with his choices. Think Daniels and Lowbendown. There is no way those two would have started for a team bent for success. Just look at the rats jumping ship. Why are they not playing. Any coach worth his salt would be rotating fresh legs every few plays. And why are right ends standing around? Helton is making his retirement fund based on his choices.

    1. Helton isn’t a cheat. He’s inept. he has no idea how to make any changes for the 2nd half. That was glaringly obvious in so many of the games lost last year – he did nothing different. In fairness he did, mercifully, rid the squad of Tee Martin but the result was close losses instead of blowout ones – still lost.

Nothing changes until Helton is …….
