Clay Helton As Underdog

  • Meanwhile, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and cornerback Isaac Taylor-Stuart did not dress for practice today. He caught one pass for four yards vs. BYU.

  1. What the stats don’t say is just how bad some of those losses were, in which much of the team really laid down. ‘Bama in ’16, ND in ’17. Those games were miserable to watch.

I want Helton gone as much as the next guy, but don’t want to sacrifice the season for that to happen.

Hoping the team pulls it together against Utah. They are going to have to do it themselves, rather than rely on leadership from the coaching staff.

    1. Root for the players to do well, even if the AD/head coach/OC/DC or whoever needs to go.

    2. “Don’t want to sacrifice the season”? Sadly, USC is going nowhere this year, unless your idea of a successful season for Helton is 8-4 and a trip to the Foster Farms Bowl in San Francisco to play Boston College, such as in 2009, or an embarrassment against a 6-7 team in El Paso in 2012.

      1. I’m not sure that that was the lowest point of Kiff…there was the near losses to Minnesota and Virginia…the NYC muddle…and the Oregon basketball game…not to mention InflateGateBeforeInflateGate…and Clown Shoes…

    3. jesus, don’t remind me, trojan1967. the first game was me trying to introduce my texas family to my love of usc football, starting with one of the game’s greatest rivalries. they begged me to leave early. the second, i watched the team apparently just fold after my beloved sam darnold fumbled away the first snap. … i vowed never to pay money to watch a clay helton coached team again.

      1. Michael:

And the highlight of this era was Sam all but single-handedly providing the snakebit kit for a Cla(nc)y Special in that Rose Bowl…

Can imagine what your Longhorn brethren were thinking judging by similar responses I’ve received from friends and family across the country…disbelief and puzzlement were the best case…indifference and skepticism the worst…

Unless/until something changes, USC is no longer among the elite and is a backwater…that’s the way I think fans across the country see it, and that enables the media to cover them as if recreating Gibbon writing “…Decline of…”

    4. He won’t be let go until after the season and before the final week of recruiting. SC has to get an AD in first. Then hopefully the AD will do his job thoroughly and hire a coach that will be very good. He can have the coach lined up during the season to take over after the end of the season, but the season is on it’s fourth game, it is too late. Just ride the season out.

  2. Riff Raff and Simon Bar Sinister were just too early to the party…now they have to wait in line behind everyone else to have at Shoeshine Boy…Polly Purebread – what do you see in him?

      2. See…
You don’t want to steer him towards our games (“Don’t ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to…”)!
I think his predicated score is pretty dead on…

  3. Theses stats really tell the true story of the ineptitude of Clay Helton. Any kind of coach would win 30-40% of these games. 67, I hate to sacrifice this season as well, however, I would rather lose a current battle to win the overall war which is Helton’s dismissal. He can’t luck into 8 wins this year and keep his job. The man has to leave and as soon as possible.

    1. Linkster, I hear you. Hope we can have some good victories this year, and that the new AD is sufficiently competent to know that Helton should not be the HC of this team, even if the record – whatever it will be – would otherwise make it difficult to dismiss him.

It is hard to believe that it has only been 15 games since Sam Darnold left…

      1. I’m with you both – I pointed out…sarcastically…to Mule (he needs to reappear in Owns guise in order for the Mule to be put back in mothballs)…that, in essence, Sam was Linkster’s point to the extreme…he masked/overshadowed for a time Helton & Co.’s inadequacies…but whatever it takes for the program to be rid of him…a new AD who is smart enough as you say ’67…or if as a worst case measure, this season degenerating into something the likes of which haven’t been seen since the ’50s…

  4. Clay has everything to gain by winning Friday night. Harrell also has much to gain by winning. It is too bad we don’t have a viable alternative to Slovis. What I mean is someone to come in while Kedon calms down. It was clear that the quarterback was rattled and needed a timeout (in the corner). Now I would love to see the USC offense click on track. Spread passes around to all receivers and ends. Involve fresh legs by revolving the same series.

    1. Helton has nothing to gain because no one believes whatever success is achieved byt eh squad in 2019 is due to him – no one. 2018 was proof positive of his ineptitude w.o. Sam Darnold, as all said, would be the case.

Nothing changes until Helton is gone.

  5. 2-Cents Worth:

Talent wins and SC does not have enough “horses.” The help from coaching is limited– Saban or Meyers could not turn any of us into serviceable players. But how do you get the talent– the footballers are spreading out all over the USA, so equality has arrived except for the few Clemsons and Alabamas. Translation– it is hard to win today. If only 10-2 or better will do for you, you’ll do a lot of crying in your beer this year.

  6. Just puke

This is the best case scenario for your favorite team, THUG U aka cheeter’sville aka ruins, your team plays at 7:30 P.M. on Saturday night at Washington State. What that means is, after their traditional loss going 0-4, they usually drive to Spokane which is 90 miles north. Then they hop on a plane and land at LAX. They won’t be home until around 9:00 A.M. Sunday morning. I think I will tell OPS to hold the plane after it lands for a couple of hours on the tramac. You and ur lousy ruins. Hahahahahahahhahaaahahaha
