Discuss The USC-Utah Game

USC’s defensive line played well and Matt Fink was inspiring in place of Kedon Slovis.

But Utah proved to be Utah. Not ready for prime time. Or the Coliseum.

The secondary was awful. The play calling, with its stubborn tries to go up the middle. The bad reads on USC blitzes.

And USC had so many of its typical bad things: The penalties. The bad use of Markese Stepp. The bad timeout call in the fourth quarter. The near-errant snap in the Victory Formation.

What an ugly game.

    1. I don’t think it was an ugly game. Yes lots of penalties, but half of them hem on both sides were ridiculous. Tough physical game on both sides. Great plays on both sides. Very entertaining! I guess you will find negatives in everything!

  2. The bozos lucked out. The Ref’s had money on the Clownsters.

The Utah OC calls were just short of imbecilic, especially on goal to go downs. Utah wasted away @ the Crumbling Mausoleum.

JT Daniels played in a BS offense for “his entire career” (meaning the one year he started) and he has NFL arm talent. I’m more than happy to let Fink live his dream, but if in him you see a guy who has NFL talent, then you are just dreaming right along with him.

  3. Like I said earlier, it was a toss up. But I don’t understand why Clay Helton buried Matt Fink on the bench, I didn’t see the talent gap between Fink, and TJ Daniels. But nevertheless , Bozo Helton is still a clown 🤡

      1. Clay –USC played tonight as though they heard what you said. They played the way we all hoped they could and would play. They have a chance to do something this year. Now, let’s show some support.

      2. MG, all that has been missing is the effort and the playmaking and it was all there last night. They really looked inspired and they kept it up all night. I can’t remember seeing such a sustained effort from a USC defense. That defense had every reason to give up last night and they just didn’t. For all our talk of QBs, that game was won by a defense that was resolved to protect their house. Definitely one to grow on for this team.

I’ve been a fan for nearly/about 40 years now seen alot of SC football games. Give Matt Fink his due for living his dream tonight he finally got the chance and delivered. Hats off to him! Quit pulling a Scott I will bitch about anything Wolfman wolf. Fink is the man now he waited his turn and earned it! He could of transfered out of USC but decided to stay and fight on! He’s the epitome of being a Trojan and true USC fans are proud of him. Not these so called sunshine pumpers that these Jackk asses like Budda&Tebow and the rest of the trolls on here like to call true SC fans. What do you bitch asses have to say now after tonight’s victory for SC?

      4. trojanboogs — I think Clay agrees with you (I know I do) that Fink deserves a shitload of praise for what he did tonight. Wherever we go from her, Fink will always be a Trojan hero for this performance. Nobody can ever take it away from him.

      5. Clay —Hopefully this win shows them what they can do. The folks who are saying we lucked out in this game cuz of Pittman (same folks who said we lucked out with Sam) are missing the point. We aren’t going to make jump balls into our entire offense each and every week. We did it yesterday cuz Utah was asking for it. We’ll do something different with Washington. And with Notre Dame. The main thing is this team seems energized. [I hope slipping Kedon back into the offense doesn’t upset the chemistry —because I think he brings the broader range of plays we’ll need against our next 2 opponents]……

      6. I mostly agree, but the jump balls weren’t because Utah was asking for them, but because our QB doesn’t really have a great arm. The Utes didn’t really play bad defense on our receivers, our receivers just made plays on bad balls. A lot of the catches were balls that I would’ve been complaining about our DBs not seeing and intercepting if positions were reversed. DBs not seeing pickable balls is one of my pet peeves.

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Clay —You “get” defensive back play way better than me. Is it your opinion that our guys are being told not to try to jump the route? In fact, being told not to watch the ball at all —and just get a hand up when the receivers eyes widen? It seems we used to get way more interceptions under Pete than with Lane, Sark or Clay. It’s got to be the way we teach the position now, doesn’t it?

        Liked by 1 person

      8. “Jumping the route” is a very specific thing and it’s something you do when you already see everything and you’re making a play on the ball. It can be a good way to be fooled by a pump fake and double move. If they are looking at the receivers eyes, I don’t really see them getting their hands up, do you? So, I can’t say that they are being coached to do it that way because they aren’t doing it that way. It seems like they are being coached just to be in position to make a tackle and that’s good enough.

    1. he doesn’t like Matt or Jack beating out his loved ones…SC would be 4-0 now under either, and 10-2 last yr…they are both excellent runners and can pass and even on the run…I said it last yr and all of this yr.

  4. Some great individual performances by Pittman, Hufanga, Drake Jackson, and Jalen McKenzie on the o-line.

Kudos to Matt “The King of the LA River” Fink.

No way Utah is a top-10 team.

      1. When Utah lost Big Mouth Moss (who said he’d “reopen USC’s BYU wounds and make them bigger”), they became a one person team (and their QB ended up surrendering the game with that safety).

  5. Great victory by USC….the officiating was overboard esp that last one against UT per interference but a great victory by Fink and the receivers and that great defense as well as the ‘O’ line… as Urban Meyer said: “…how can you not give him the start next week?”

      1. Tim, did you happen to notice the ball that Slovis delivered on the play he went out on? The kid saw the hit coming, hung in there and delivered a frickin’ STRIKE. We need to get Slovis back as soon as possible. Stop confusing a team win with individual QB talent.

  6. Scotty you remind me a lot of Big Joe McDonnell. He loved everything UCLA but attended CSUN. He hated USC and was just as snarky as you

Anyway, this is a SIGNATURE win for Clay, like it or not.

    1. Read that ‘homage’ Markazi gave fatty Joe in the Times two weeks ago? McDonnell blew every bridge there was by constantly mocking so many but esp. his wisecracks of the former Dodger manager Jim Tracy. When McDonnell’s contract wrapped up – no one hired him. And you’re right – he loathed USC and just like owns never went to bel-air tech

As to your remark about sticking a hand up in the receivers face…IF I understand that as you meant it…that’s pass interference unless the db is going for the ball. It used to be maybe things have changed.

  7. Guys, don’t go crazy about Fink. He has a good head, but doesn’t have a good arm and he should enjoy the college experience as long as he can. I like his headiness and ability to escape, but he doesn’t have a future with that arm. If you’re basing the decision on who should start on arms alone, there is no decision.

You gotta give it to the defense and these receivers, especially Michael Pittman. Great hands, great handwork and a great job after the catch. I think these safeties are a really nice pair that should only get better, but I’m still not getting what I need from Gaoteote. The freshman DE is showing you why I think he’s the most exciting D-line prospect I’ve seen since Leonard Williams and the entire D-line and defense played like men. Tough, hard-nosed, statement win by a team that matched it’s athleticism and talent with a serious desire and will to win. I can’t overstate the effort I saw out there on defense, especially in the red zone.

These Pac 12 refs never fail to make themselves a part of the story whenever there’s a big TV audience. How can this be a coincidence?

I’ll have more, but I just want to tell all the “Trojan fans” who were rooting for the team to lose tonight to F off. Good night.

    1. You’re right, Clay. The kids became men tonight. This was a huge win for the team. [And, if Kedon is not in concussion protocol, he should start next week against Washington —he would have hooked up on a couple of those plays Fink missed]…..

  8. I wondered if my recording of the game with an extended 30 minutes would make it. I almost don’t care, but I love watching this type of a game. My friend RT keeps saying that USC is playing like a bad Disney movie. This week’s twist 3 rd string quarterback comes in for a great game.

  9. Couldn’t be prouder of the team. They played with guts against a Senior laden Utah team. USC plays a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores which bodes well for next year. Marlon and Jay Tufele were BEASTS. Tufonga is the closest thing I’ve seen to Troy Polamalu. Pittman made himself a lot of money today.

    Sweet Victory.

  11. Ah, the revenge of the nerds, ….er….., the mobile quarterbacks over the drop back pocket passers. So much for using immobile QB’s for Air Raid. But the obvious question must be asked: how was JTD the clear winner of the QB competition when both Slovis and now Fink have shown more in single games than JTD ever did in any one game after playing a full season at QB? Sure, JTD had good stats against Notre Dame last year but he didn’t produce TD’s. How could this be? How could your 3rd string QB show so much more leadership, toughness and determination and throw 3 long-ball scores? Something is seriously wrong here. Credit goes to the players for the Utah game. How does that little ditty of a saying go in one of SC’s fight songs? “It’s up to you”. Well, it was up to Fink and he did what his team needed him to do. And imagine that coach Sarkisian brought Fink into the program as a scout team QB to help the team prepare against opposing running QB’s. BTW, SC did “develop” a player but it wasn’t the player they thought it was going to be and he was riding the bench all along.

  12. All you fans that want urban Meyer as our next coach should of heard his comments on the post game show. He was very proud of Matt Fink and his performance. He was especially proud for the man for not transferring and sticking it out for 4 years to wait for his shot. He said he would ride the hot hand and keep Fink as the starter for the next game. He gave Helton and Harrell alot of credit for having a 3rd stringer ready to play and not miss a beat on offense. I like Urban as an analyst he knows his football. Great to have a coaches angle on things.
Especially when it’s the coach most USC fans want as their next head coach!

    1. credit?
he was better than ‘jt’ last yr and this yr, but thew hellton love child and the Harrell love child had to be safe, so they demoted the 2 best to the no practice rep prison…how do they deserve credit ? Matt excelled in spite of their actions.
He has the character and talent ,the team is improving, and now the 2 mountains I figure SC could not over come as a team are looming…BTW just because one predicts your team will lose and you are an objective fan/student of the game does not mean you do not wish your team of 68 yrs isn’t winning…1951 was my first in person seeing SC play…loved ’em since that time.Never rooted against them, never will.

  13. Utah secondary was horrible. Michael Pittman smoked them without even having to fight for the ball.

Utah Offensive Line and their secondary is not at the level you would expect of a 10th ranked team.

Kyle Wittingham blew it with the play calling at the goal line.

USC won they played hard but UTAH did everything they could to lose it.
