USC Notes: Get The Stars The Ball

Did you notice wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown caught three passes in the first five plays against Utah?

Those are scripted plays and it makes sense because there was talk of discontent last week with the fact St. Brown caught only one pass vs. BYU.

And if Clay Helton doesn’t like something, it is an unhappy skill player.

Remember two years ago when Michael Pittman’s father ripped the coaches on twitter on a Monday and Pittman suddenly made the fist start of his career that Saturday vs. Arizona State?

  • It still feels odd when USC acts like it is a big deal to beat Utah.

“This win is huge,” Michael Pittman said. “We came in here and we knocked off the No. 10 team, and we’re feeling really good, but we knew that we could do this the whole time. It’s not really a shock to us.”

  • I didn’t see the end of the Cal-Ole Miss game but the Pac-12 officials find themselves in hot water for how it ended.

    1. Mississippi has the same disease Utah has. Big mouths & they stick their foot in it. And for an SEC team that brags about it: they had poor coaching. And are really sore losers.
Mr Corral(SoCal boy-Ole Miss qb) talked trash all week & at the end of the game, Evan Weaver summed it up perfectly: “he’s really not that good of a qb”. Weaver made 22! tackles.
Same as that Utah punk-“we’re going to open the wound wider”.

      1. Glad some Californians showed them racist Rebels how football is played. Corral needs to grow up. Zack Moss needs to do something before smacking his gums anymore. The ball has to cross the end zone, but it was their own mismanagement which cost them the even a shot a the game. Cal went out and took the game.

      2. Sort of under the media radar: Cal beat Old Miss on the road and San Jose State (who?) beat Arkansas on the road 31-24 (Pac-12 beat two SEC teams).

      3. San Jose State 31-24 win over SEC Arkansas State was led by QB Josh Love (3* from Long Beach Poly) and receiver Isaiah Holiness (2 * from Redlands).

Five star QB Matt Corral from Long Beach Poly lost to Cal.

      4. ‘Berkely Farms’ Wilcox is doing an awful lot with what he has – far far more than Helton could or ever would do. He’s (Wilcox) the rising star in the Pac-12 right now.

Nothing changes until Helton is gone.

      2. this post didn’t age so well…

Honestly, I was going to post something a little less moderate about this game at the half but was sidetracked.

      1. Michael, it is interesting that “get the ball to the stars” is the best Scottie could come up with to tell us that a win is really a loss.

And we can still laugh plenty at ucla. They still have the fat man as the coach. And they still have the worse defensive coordinator in power 5 conferences. Even worse than Pendergast.

      1. Michael, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the “victory bell” has rung 15 years out of the last 20 for SC against bruins, and 49 times versus 32 in the all time series.

      1. Hey, What?, I am loopy, but I don’t hate the Bruins and am a true native southern Californian who hates that all these teams come in and raid California’s talent. I’d rather the best talent stay here. I love SC football, but only hate the Bruins when Troy plays them. That is all.

    1. Luckiest win I’ve ever seen. WSU could have scored 100 points on your terrible defense if they just would have held on to the ball.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometime. Especially if WSU hands it to the blind squirrel.

      1. Fitting that a pullman protege comes onto an SC blog to knock the ruins defense. Wrong turn Adrian. Left, not right at the Slauson cutoff.

    2. Epic comeback (even ESPN noted that Pac 12 after dark, while not always relevant to the national playoff discussion, is far and away the most consistently compelling/confounding watching in all of college football)…

With how mercurial every Pac-12 program is, and given it’s just one game, to soon to get carried away…but I recall having commented to you after the Cincinnati game that I thought your offense wasn’t nearly as bad as it seemed (appeared to be just a hair away on a number of plays)…

    3. Well guess ima have to change your moniker to “one-fer”, hell of a game for watching, a great combination of the Marx bros vs the keystone cops.

      1. Puddly, I’ll throw in the 3 stooges (see below) with the Marx Brothers and the Keystone Cops.

Wazzou looked something like this in the fourth quarter:

Whatever words Leach said on the sidelines to the offense during the third quarter —— need never to be said by any coach to any offense again.

  1. So Helton’s team is now favored to win the South, and if so, will be one game away from the Rose Bowl (unless it wins out and makes the Final-4). Would SC fire a coach that made the Rose Bowl?– Doubtful

I thought Utah would blow SC away, so I have been eating crow since the game and loving it. The SC boys made us proud.

    1. Such a strange situation we are in. We want the team to win, and they played with heart against Utah, and some new guys like Drake Jackson are emerging as leaders. But at the same time, we want Helton out.

  2. I’m laughing my ass off about Ol Miss thinking they got robbed. The SEC officials have done what the Pac 12 refs did for decades. Ol Miss got a taste of their own medicine.
