Another Critique Of Utah

An NFL coach read by criticism of Utah’s game plan yesterday and added this to the list:

“Did you see how poorly they handled USC’s blitz?

Clancy Pendergast kept blitzing from the open side. Why didn’t the Utah coaches bring their tight end across from the side or something? Why didn’t they put the tight end in motion to come over to that side? Then he could pick up the blitz. They didn’t do that. It was a joke.”

  • Petros Papadakis said on Monday that USC’s best three quarterback performances of 2018-19 were “2018: Jack Sears vs. ASU, 2019: Kedon Slovis vs. Stanford, 2019: Matt Fink vs. Utah.

“Sears played 1 full game; Fink has played 1 full game; Slovis has played two full games. JT Daniels has played 11 full games and doesn’t make the list.”

  1. Maybe they thought the tackle being beat like a drum by Drake Jackson on the opposite side was more embarrassing so he left him there? How many holding penalties did our defensive line cause? Moot point by your expert, try paying him for the top shelf stuff.

    1. Sorry, Pudly, take no particular offense, but Petros poses a good point …you know what I mean lol…USC would be undefeated, with my boy, Jack Sears! When ‘67 reminds the crowd that Sears had the same score as Odell, well, that’s irritating…Fink helped illustrate the case…

      2. If you’re correct about Sears, we should see him starting and winning games for whoever he plays for next, right? After he does all that, we’ll see him get drafted high as well, right? So, I guess we’ll see…

You’re not describing Sears as a serviceable QB, you’re describing him as a savior and better than any other QB at USC. I’m not old enough to remember Pat Haden at USC, but my guess is that USC was a run dominant program when he was there and they probably relied on a good QB less than teams these days do. Like I said, I didn’t see those teams play, but how many passes a game did he throw back then? What did Pat Haden primarily do at USC, hand off? I doubt that he’s a good comparison given the way the game is played today.

      7. You don’t always just find that in a system or textbook. You’ve got to know the strengths and weaknesses of your roster, and how they all might mesh together….a finer point of coaching…improvise, adapt etc etc etc

I didn’t see Evans or Rae and I remember Rodney Peete being a damn good QB. He was certainly better than Jack Sears. Didn’t Peete get some Heisman votes or something. Peete gets props from me for no other reason that marrying Holly Robinson. Are you trying to tell me Jack Sears is better than Rodney Peete was? If so, you’re not helping your case at all. Perhaps you should go back to talking to yourself because you’d have a more receptive audience for this nonsense.

      14. Forgive me, but when you say Pat Haden, Lynn Swann and Vince Evans, I think Rams, Steelers and Bears. Modern football is different than the game you’re referencing when you mention these names. How much was the running back position emphasized back then relative to how it is emphasized now? Did you notice that at some point the star position at USC stopped being the running back and started being the QB? In all your examples, anything from this century?

Jack Sears is just a guy and Rodney Peete finished 2nd in Heisman voting. There’s no comparison between Rodney Peete and Jack Sears. Sears may be serviceable, but that’s not what I’m looking for in a USC QB in this day and age. If I had OJ Simpson back there, I’d be willing to settle for serviceable at QB. He can go somewhere else and be serviceable. If he’s the savior that you’re describing him to be, we’ll see it at his next school. If not, I guess he’ll just be playing for yet another coach who can’t evaluate QB talent. Right?

NOW you are trying to talk about styles because you’re trying to deflect. Your point was that he was the best QB on the roster and you bringing up names from other eras doesn’t bolster that point in any way. If he’s as good as you say he is, we’ll find out at his next stop. Why wouldn’t you agree to that? You’re saying his only hindrance is a coaching staff that can’t evaluate QB talent and we’ll have the chance to get another staff’s opinion soon enough.

  3. Flow. Stop it. An NFL coach did not read bour (see our favorite “journalist’s” entry above) criticism of anything. And as for your boyfriend, Petros, those 3 Games were all inspired games played by backups. The situation for all 3 games can get the rest of the team pumped up.

  4. I wonder what game the supposed NFL coach was watching. Did he see the sack on 3rd and 1 where Utah had 2 tight ends in the game. Maybe it was the sack / intentional grounding where we didn’t blitz at all. Maybe it was the Greg Robinson sack where we blitzed off both edges and Utah did keep tight end in to pick up a strong side blitz.

Or maybe you just pull this out of thin air, or as the rest of the world calls it…. a lie.

  5. Why isn’t it as simple as shifting the blitz call away from the TE side, whatever side he is on? What team does this guy coach for? I saw JT play in this offense for maybe one half and he looked great in it. Yes, Jack Sears was good at escaping the pocket and playing broken field football. That’s great on the sandlot, but it’s not an organizing principle for a major college offensive system. Sears is not here because he wanted to run as opposed to running the offense. Why doesn’t USC ever get credit from you for causing problems and mismatches for other teams? Oh yeah… you can’t give USC credit for anything, you need to make everything about Helton to support your premise. Petros is just like you in that he has a grudge against USC for some reason and I’m sure that’s why he gets your patronage. Lose on, Wolf.

Or that he didn’t want to go to SC to begin with
But then of course he sympathizes with Sears, he (petros) quit on Kal
And he never got over not being accepted/offered by the ruins

  6. Just spoke to a former USC football player sitting near me on a flight into LAX.
He cracked about one of my question – Is Scott Wolf, taken seriously by the players?
He said during his time at USC, PC made it a point to ignore Scotty and the team took his lead. He also said do not think for a minute when he refers to a NFL coach, PAC 12 coach or former player that he is telling the truth. He basically said Scott makes it up only to get clicks!!

Not a bad business model but he is not a journalist either.

FYI – His SuperBowl ring was mighty impressive as well.

    1. All blogs pander to their base. Some do it a little less honestly. Scott is the National Enquirer of USC blogs. It’s fun here, but nobody takes it seriously. Once in a while something Scott posts rings true but most of it is just vitriolic bovine excrement.
