USC Needs To Stop The Run

Forget about USC’s inability to run the ball on Friday for a moment and focus on the defense’s ability to stop the run.

Utah rushed for 247 yards. Fresno State 206.

That means USC has surrendered more than 200 yards in half of its games. Utah did it mostly with backups after Zack Moss got hurt.

When you consider USC’s defensive line is supposed to be its strength, that is worrisome with Washington and Notre Dame ahead.

Devin Sloane was sentenced to 4 months of prison for paying $250,000 to get his son into USC as a fake water polo recruit. He will also have to serve 500 hours of community service over two years, pay a fine of $95,000 and a special assessment of $100.

  1. Run the ball, and stop the run, is the philosophy of championship football coaches. That’s why you don’t see PAC 12 teams in the college playoffs, because they are bitch soft. 😂

  2. Chris Petersen shares his thoughts on SC…listen as he talks about the crap the team and coach have to take and why he’s glad he’s not here for scottie to skewer… Hahahahaha.

  3. I can’t forget about the team’s inability to run because it’s too important. You have to understand that what the offense does effects the defense. Why wouldn’t you be running up big numbers on offense when you’re getting the ball back so fast and you have so many possessions? You need to look at the yards per rush stat in order to criticize the defense. I haven’t done that, but then it’s not my job to make credible statements that people can rely on online. Did you even think to look at that stat before you started your criticism?

      1. Thanks, P. 4.3 is higher than you want and we need to get that under 4 yards a pop. There is a little room for criticism, but with the offense keeping those guys on the field so long, it’s forgivable. There was a point in Friday’s game where, if I was on the offense, I wouldn’t have been able to look the defense in the eye. The offense was really getting bogged down and last year’s defense would’ve quit. IMO, the best pass Fink threw all night was the one to Pitt that broke us out of the funk that I’m talking about. He laid it out there perfectly, allowed Pitt to keep his stride and picked up 30 something yards and a first down. I only watch the games once so I can’t be specific about exactly when it happened, but it needed to happen when it did. I was absolutely dying before that pass came and I know the defense and other knowledgeable fans were too.

      2. I agree totally. They did a great job not breaking and I was really proud of that defense Friday night. The offense left them hanging a lot and the defense had their back. If they can add a few more turnovers to the mix, it’ll end some of that action between the twenties. I really feel like Gaoteote should be making plays on the level that Hufanga is and I can’t wait for him to figure it out.

  4. BTW, Moss wasn’t out of the game because he twisted his ankle, he was out because he was getting the wood put to him consistently. Isaiah Pola-Mao laid his ass out on the sideline early in the game and that was his first real taste of what was to come. USC put him out of the game when he realized that he was in The Coli and not Kansas anymore. Your skirt is showing again, Wolf.

  5. SCooter,

Where is the Utah Report Card? I will give it in SCooter’s eyes:

    qb: threw interception: C+

receivers: dropped ball and did not stop the interception: C-

oline: 13 yards rushing and allowing Slovis to get knocked into next year: D-

running backs: 13 yards rushing: D-

dline: 247 yards against them F-

    lbers: non-existent: F-

dbs: did cause and recover fumble: C-

special teams: Just because of Baxter and the penalty: F-

coaches: they couldn’t coach themselves out of a paper bag: F-

  6. So statistically Scott is correct, for half their games the defense surrendered over 200 yards. However, using the same trick I can say USC won 75% of their games this season. The real statistic is that our Oline has surrendered a game ending injury for a key player in 50% of our games.
Statistics don’t lie, but liars do statistics.

  7. SW, you old Dinosaur. Do you even watch other college football teams? Did you see LSU gave up 38 points in their victory on Saturday? Texas and OSU scored in their 30s. These are elite teams. Just watch the scoreboards and you’ll see that your views on college football are archaic and not realistic.
