Should USC Call Jack Sears?

If you were Clay Helton and the No. 1 thing was making sure USC was at its best, wouldn’t you call Jack Sears and ask him to consider returning to the team?

I doubt Sears would be interested but if you are a coach, it seems like the right move to ask. Just to avoid having a walk-on playing if Matt Fink gets hurt.

I bet if Pete Carroll were coaching, he would have called Sears by now. The fact Helton hasn’t probably speaks volumes about how he feels about Sears. He would rather risk losing than make the call.

Someone will say in the comments Sears needs to return on his own. Remember, the coach wields the power. Also, Helton is the adult in the scenario so he should make the call.

    1. Pudly —Clay decided to make Sears 4th because, at the TIME, he was all in with Harrell’s system and he didn’t want an improviser. He wanted a guy that fit his system —and that wasn’t Sears. But now that we’re at TIME 2 (no genuine Air Raid quarterback left), it would be nice if we had a talented dual threat at qb —-(i. e., an accurate passer and fast runner to make the team go).
Clay played the best cards he had in August —things just worked out a little differently than he planned…..

      1. Sorry MG, I don’t buy your QB scenario. A fb team can’t have too many qualified QBs available and naming the Jr. Sears 4th string never made sense.

      2. The only things we know for sure? Sears scholarship was guaranteed for 4 yrs. Clay couldn’t take it from him. He decided to give it up.

Not sure that Harrell would consider Slovis as done yet. Not for the game, or the season for that matter. And if Perdue is asked to step up Saturday, I’ve got a feeling he’ll be just fine and champing at the bit to become the third legend Trojan QB this season… hahahahaha, well I better reel it in a little…that might be a step too far.

      1. The last sentence from the bio you posted..
“ PERSONAL: He is a business administration major at USC with a 3.48 GPA. He spent a year (2012-13) living in Australia.”

Looks like you might take your own advice. Trusting scottie’s post isn’t the best source

      2. Jack Sears was WASTED and has never recovered…Helton was weak. His leadership and development of USC football was weak and we are happily rid of Harrell ( wasted the talent and ability of very good running backs in his lame air raid offense that needed a powerful O line to work!)

Sears was at least Cody Kessler/ john David Booty level talent- much more disciplined than JT Daniels under pressure and most likely more durable than Kedon Slovis in rough game play.

Sadly thanks to those awful post 2017 years ( Sam Darnold and the rest were smart to go Pro before 2018) we saw talent wasted and undeveloped. JT Daniel’s is still limping around college football ( WVU) , Slovis will be shaky at PITT ( expect ” IF” he starts Pitt will be a 8-4 team at best), and Sears after Boise is now looking for somewhere to use his last year of eligibility and maybe a shot at a CFL pro roster…

All lost because of a weak coach…

    2. So Valus Jones and Matt Fink didn’t walk out and then return? Fink even took a visit to Illinois. Bru McCoy de-committed signed with another team and then returned?

Unequal justice if you ask me.

And what coach let’s the team make roster decisions anyways?
That’s some little league Bull $hit..

      1. Pudly, I like your comments and contributions to this blog, but in reality it was Clueless Clay who abandoned Sears by staging a phony QB competition and then embarrassing him by making him the 4th stringer after faithfully being in the program for 3+ years. I don’t blame Sears, he needs to concentrate on his schoolwork and hopefully finding a school that will give him an honest opportunity. Furthermore, Gomer will not ask him back because if he actually came back and had a performance like Fink’s last week it would only confirm everyone’s suspicions that Clueless has no clue.

      2. Didn’t Sears have a year of eligibility to lose? He’s already red shirted? Would you burn 1 of your 2 remaining years, 4th string, when you you’ve done nothing wrong, played well? You can only kick a guy so long, until he gets the message..

      3. He lost this year’s eligibility whether he “played” or left this year. He would be getting backup reps this week.

Calabasas, I understand your logic, but no team knows their qb situation yet because of transfers or injuries that may happen or might not heal right. Just sayin. And he’d still have showed loyalty to his guys.
BTW, doesn’t Harrell get any credit for having multiple QBs start and throw for over 300 yds? The only starter who didn’t was JT and he was on his way to over 400 when he went down…

      4. I went to the scrimmage, been writing about this for over a year, Jack easily looked to me the most durable, versatile qb there, by far….athletes know athletes……Sears more than fulfilled his obligations to USC…it’s on Coach Helton…2 quarterbacks going down, so quick, is definitely a sign…people who say otherwise just haven’t been in Jack’s shoes….simple as that…he’s a good kid…

      5. It takes time for a quarterback to find a place to go. There’s only 1 on the field, unlike other positions…to suggest he should just accept a 4th string demotion, is insensitive to time constraints in an imperfect system…

Just so you aren’t getting anything wrong, the above comment is the one I was referring to when I said you’re finally making sense. You can save the rest for far more gullible people.

    3. You’re babbling again. Making a point is the last thing you’re trying to do because you don’t have one to make. For all your talk of being an athlete, you don’t understand that you are discounting the contributions of most of the people who come here. The ironic thing is that I’m probably the one guy you shouldn’t be directing that bullshit to. If I was as insecure as you are, I would feel the need to offer my bona fides and drop names. However, I don’t need to go back in time and grab at straws because I know what I’m talking about. Game recognizes game, you don’t have any and I don’t care what Pat Haden did 50 years ago. Your knowledge of football is limited and that’s just the truth.

  1. Why would Sears come back to be second string against UDub, and then go back to 4th string, assuming Matt doesn’t get injured and Slovis returns from concussion protocol?

Not saying Sears should be 4th string, but this is the reality that he would have if he were to come back.

      1. He can’t transfer now..this year is shot. His leaving the team before Dec doesn’t help him out a bit.. how do we know if someone gets hurt at Ok, Bama or anywhere else. He will have two years regardless and could still be on another campus by the holidays if he chose.

  2. I’VE SAID THIS MANY TIMES! Helton REPEATEDLY MISMANAGES TALENTED PLAYERS!!! Plays stupid politics when WINNING SHOULD BE PARAMOUNT! It’s oftentimes ASTONISHING to me that he’s the USC head football coach… go figure… And WHO trusts RAW FRESHMAN, WHO WILL MAKE RAW FRESHMAN MISTAKES TO START A SEASON TWO YEARS IN A ROW WHEN HIGHLY TALENTED QB’s, (JACK SEARS, etc.,), ARE ALREADY IN PLACE, IN THE PROGRAM, WAITING 4 THEIR CHANCE FIRST??? FAKE “Open Competition” means NOTHING IF your mind is ALREADY MADE UP!!!. APOLOGIZE TO young MR. SEARS, who BALLED OUT when given a chance ONLY TO BE IGNORED by Helton and who (JACK SEARS), also had a GREAT Spring), and GIVE HIM THE JOB TIL HE PROVES OTHERWISE!!! It’s what ANY GOOD & HONEST, COMPETENT, UNSELFISH, (PUT THE PROGRAM FIRST) head coach WOULD DO!!! It’s ASTONISHING Helton is the person making CRITICAL DECISIONS for OUR USC TROJANS!!! WE TRUE FANS & SUPPORTERS DESERVE MUCH BETTER!!! REMOVE HIM PLEASE!!!

  3. SCooter,

You are making a big assumption saying that Helton is the adult. As far as I see it, if Helton was the adult, then he would have checked his ego and plan for the worse. He should have kept Sears an place him as second stringer. Helton acted like a child and dug his heels in. Yes, Helton needs to call and man up and tell Sears that he screwed up.

The only good thing though is, that if Helton’s ego is that big or he is not that smart, and SC loses four in a row, then he is gone. he is gone for running the team into the ground, losing recruits, and losing games. If the new AD has any power to do that, he should.

  4. Not sure about the propriety of Sears leaving the team, but he is not going to return to be second string for one game against Washington and probably not play, and then fall back to 3rd string when Slovis returns next week.

  5. If Sears is living in Siberia, then Clay needs to contact him. And yes I think Sears should have been closer to the top especially after seeing him play. I really think the advantage the backups have over the “starters” is they don’t have to work around the bad coaching Helton has propagated. Helton was by all accounts a mediocre quarterback and mediocrity like cream rises to the top.

  6. Why the hell would Jack Sears comeback and bailout that fool of a coach ? Bozo Helton has a deep disregard for Sears, and he let him know it by basically making him fourth string. If JT Daniels talents were off the charts, then I’d understand. But in reality, Daniels will never start for USC again, or at any other power 5 conference school .

  7. How about a discussion of potential NCAA enforcement action against USC as a result of the Tony Bland situation. As I read the Kansas, I am not sure how Andy escapes any blame on this one. Also, NCAA could throw that lack of institutional control stuff at us due to alleged prior misdeeds.

Here is an excerpt from Kansas’ notice of allegation specifically referencing head coaches’ responsibility:

The NCAA enforcement staff believes a hearing panel of the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions could conclude that Allegation No. 4 is a severe breach of conduct (Level I) because it is a head coach responsibility violation resulting from underlying Level I violations and seriously undermined or threatened the integrity of the NCAA Collegiate Model. [NCAA Bylaw 19.1.1 and 19.1.1-(e) (2019-20)]

Where are you Wolf on this soon to be late breaking news on potential USC Basketball infractions? A real “Inside USC” journalist would be camping at Galen/Heritage Hall or even fly out to Indianapolis to get the scoop.

      1. I believe the difference would be that those at Kansas or zona we’re actually on school business at the time they were busted and the dollar amt was far greater.
Bland was in Vegas for a bachelor party. He ended up with about $2200 of the $4k he was offered and spent it at the strip club.

  8. I love Wolf’s blog.

Hitherto, Clay Russell, faux professional bozo FB blogger, sportin’ an inflated sense of self-worth and the uncommon inability to write yes or no w/o using 18 words, has finally succumbed to the richness of Wolf’s bawdy FB blog.

Ladies and gentlemen the Clayster has engaged, mano y mano, with another pimpster, in a funny series of witless, low ball, spastic personal argument/attacks.

    I am shocked!

But hey, what a roar. It’s like watching a douchebag get drunk for the first time and suffer the sweet, ugly consequences.
