Do you think when USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell said Markese Stepp was “sucking wind” he realized how much he stepped on tradition?
Do you think Harrell or running backs coach Mike Jinks, who are from Texas, have ever told a recruit about Ricky Bell, Marcus Allen or Charles White? Would they even know what to tell them? I guarantee you Harrell would not.
Bell had 51 carries for 347 yards against Washington State in 1976. And the following Tuesday he practiced as usual.
“The tailback always practiced. There was a responsibility,” former USC coach John Robinson said.
Now the coach claims the tailback was “sucking wind” on 10 carries.
By carrying about 1,000 extra pounds with him on several of his rushes, Stepp’s 10 carries might be the equivalent to 30 carries back in the day.
Ricky, Marcus, Charles, OJ, AD, Clarence Davis, et. al. never had to run behind an incompetent o-line.
Stepp’s leg drive must be close to Earl Campbell or the equivalent.

Bell used to run on the beach in Army boots in the off season, Gomer would never allow that, too strenuous

STOP. LIVING. IN. THE. PAST.

They’re constantly trying to recreate and relive the past. USC people…so haunted by their own history, so desperate to avenge and restore stolen glory and honor. Embarrassed, shamed and reeling from recent events, they seek solace in that one single thing that is perhaps dearest to their collective heart…and there’s none to be had. The poor devils…

What’s your ‘past’? Listening to Tim Cates with that, current asinine ‘Bruin Moment’ regaling about some unknown TN Titan lb making the pro bowl 3 years in a row?

I don’t know who Tim Cates is and I don’t know anything about the other stuff you’re talking about. I’m not a big sports media consumer any longer and I don’t spend a lot of time listening to talking heads. I don’t follow anything like I follow USC football and I’m kind of embarrassed that I come here and do this stuff. I would never tell my friends that I do this. Sorry if I touched a nerve, but sometimes I do that.

Arturo Orlando –
I”m curious, what is it about the past that you find so outdated? Having a tough running game? SC had no business nor need changing from a pro style offense. The air raid and pistol offenses are a joke. Stepp would be even more unstoppable carrying the ball, with momentum, in the I formation. Your comments reek of the new soy boy society we now live in.

Lebron James….kool daddio and the NBA….can’t go to NC to play the All-Star Game because the state legislature hit back against a perv transgender bathroom….won’t visit POTUS but hey insult him….can’t call owners’ OWNERS says the NBA. Questions the intelligence of the HOU GM Morey – ..Morey Northwestern BA and MIT Mgmt….James a functional near illiterate high school grad.
This is what this egomaniac thug is …. NBA the waste and the Hollywood hasbeens that go there to get an agent, watching the game on TV say “Hey I didn’t know Jane Fonda was still alive? Gotta’ give Jane a call tomorrow”

Alv, why do all brothers have to be daddios to you? James a thug? He has done more for underprivileged kids than anyone on this site.
Honest question, no disrespect.

Got it Art – succinctly this sport in particular, has consumed talk radio more here in LA than anywhere else. As to my characterizations….been to an NBA pre-game in the past 30 years….had to listen to the raucous racket and the PA statements? Specific to ‘kool daddios’ watching them being interviewed by the fawning media is the norm.
Admittedly James has done more than anyone for underprivileged kids but I’d say that case can be made for a number of the famous and many that don’t seek the publicity this clown does…his statement per the PROC is him – a spoiled individual who no one has ever had the temerity to push back and two nights ago no one finally did.

‘Art’ truly in hindsight, a better choice of words would have been far better rather on my part than pillorying all – thanks for your reasoned feedback

It’s just a little nerdy to me, but it seems small enough and I just don’t know any other people who can or want to talk about it to the extent that I can/do. Any port in a storm… Also, I’m not sure how many people I’d want seeing me telling someone to sniff my balls and write me a report on the experience either. You just seemed pissed off at the world and everything in it.

It was McKay that said the ball wasn’t heavy, but watching Stepp carry the team across the goal line was like watching one of those weight lifting contests. I’m talking about the kind where the lifter picks up a huge truck tire and carries it for distance. Stepp literally raised the whole group up over the goal line. One giant step knee high and foot planted boom touchdown.
I read the article about Ricky Bell and remember his explosive plays. Stepp reminds me of him. He is the antithesis for a bad Oline. I am willing to bet he could have scored more often if there was better blocking. I renew my call to have both backs in the backfield running the power I. It might be old school but that’s the beauty of it nobody runs it anymore.

Amen – Marcus Allen made note of that 2 years ago in a radio interview on PMS. He said nothing makes an O line happier than a powerful running game. They just keep moving that scrimmage line closer and closer to the opponent’s goal and best of all chew up time of possession. His comments were specific per Helton’s 3rd year and, even allowing for Darnold, what a farce Helton is as a head coach.
