USC Injury Report

Vavae Malepeai underwent knee surgery. Now here is who did not dress for practice Wednesday.

Palaie Gaoteote (ankle)

Olaijah Griffin (back)

Greg Johnson (shoulder)

Christian Rector (ankle)

Isaac Taylor-Stuart (ankle)

Tyler Vaughns (unreported)

What a great strength and conditioning program.

If USC had a game today, the secondary could be Talanoa Hufanga and Isaiah Pola-Mao at safety with Dorian Hewett, Chris Steele, Max Williams and Max Williams the cornerbacks. That’s three true freshmen in the secondary.

  1. Several talented people are out, which doesn’t look good for the S & C staff. But we can’t blame the S & C staff for the grossly dirty play by the punk domer on grabbing Gaoteote’s junk which led to his ankle injury.

Rector seemed to have tried to come back way too soon from his injury.

I have no idea how Griffin could be cleared to play football any time soon with a bulging disc in his back.

And it now seems that Max Williams has replicated himself, as there are now 2 of them according to Scottie.

Scottie, you really, really should proofread your blog.

  2. Notice that most are defensive players. The recipe for injuries this year;: One, a lot of young players (means that they are not physically mature) . Two, these players in the secondary are being asked to make a disproportionate amount of tackles because of the scheme (4-2-5). Three, the offense has done a poor job of sustaining drives and keeping the D off the field. It is too simplistic to blame the strength and conditioning program,

  4. In days long past, there were taped ankles(for rigidity) taped hands, almost like boxers, for linemen and taped forearms, taped fingers…no one wore fancy gloves, receivers used resin on their hands…they got banged up but played all the games. So…why not now? No pads on the knees, shoulder pads look to be half the size they were 10-12 years ago and we wonder why the players are getting hurt.
I remember in one interview with Eric Dickerson, he stated he wore all the pads he could find, thigh, back, hips, ran hard didn’t want to get hurt…seems smart, today for the players, it’s just about looking cool, not protected.

    1. Coach Helton: “If any of my guys get hurt I want it to be during a game by somebody who really knows how to hurt them, not at some silly practice by one of our own guys not pulling up at the right moment.”

  5. Not sure you can blame ankle injuries on strength and conditioning. More like on equipment and possible technique.

    1. There has been more ankle injuries on this team than normal… it goes back quite a ways, seems there is not the necessary concern from the Adults (Coaches) on this team to remedy these occurrences and determine there cause…

      1. Has anyone considered the possibility that USC’s legal and medical staff have decided to avoid the kind of litigation they experienced under Pete (when a couple of players sued for being asked to play with injuries) by holding out players with minor injuries that other teams wouldn’t worry about? …
