Song Girls Back At Galen Center

USC plays an exhibition tonight vs. Villanova at the Galen Center and the song girls will be allowed to perform, per the L.A. Times.

I guess all those space and time constraints cited by last year are gone. Or maybe it’s just Lynn Swann that is gone. This is why you have to skeptical whenever USC gives a reason for anything.

Remember the official statement:

“Due to ongoing game management concerns,” the statement read, “time constraints and space issues at the Galen Center, the USC Song Girls will not perform at the remaining men’s and women’s basketball games for the 2018-19 season.

“USC Athletics and the Division of Student Affairs jointly made the decision after trying various options over multiple years to accommodate both the Song Girls and the Trojan Dance Force, which was established in 1994 to support USC basketball, at the arena.”

Let’s also remember the following:

What most people don’t realize is former USC coach Bob Boyd got the idea for the song girls and they debuted in 1968. They were such a hit that John McKay let them perform at football games.

From late November to late January last year, here is what Swann did:

  • Kept Clay Helton
  • Banned song girls from Galen Center
  • Did not make sweeping coaching staff changes
  • Saw recruiting slide
  • Botched the Kliff Kingsbury hiring/departure
  • Went to Augusta National Golf Club

  1. Scott tries to cleverly arrange bullet points to make it look like Swann wasn’t a good manager….

  2. If the blogger was as informed as the rest of the local media he would have mentioned that the Song Girls got banned in the first place because of allegations that a number of the girls participated in a “Fire Helton!” chant.
