First off, be sure to check out this week’s podcast below. It includes a hard-to-believe recruiting nugget that sort of says it all about USC recruiting now.
- Have you read anywhere else skepticism about Clay Helton‘s comment that Clancy Pendergast and some defensive coaches watched NFL film last week to put in a game plan to stop Khalil Tate?
Think about it. Tate has played USC three times before this season. You have an entire offseason to prepare a game plan. But USC waited until last week? That doesn’t show much preparation or forethought.
And the big reveal from Helton is that USC used a “twist game” which just means the inside-and-outside players switched roles. But it still means even if Drake Jackson starts a play on the inside he ends up on the outside.
It’s not novel or rocket science. But Helton inflates its impact to make it look like Pendergast is a genius. Against Arizona. Ian Book was more mobile than Tate. Maybe the “twist game” should have been used a week earlier.
- I spoke to an NFL coach Tuesday who questioned if USC players are lifting the correct weights when they get hurt making routine shoulder tackles. I mention it to demonstrate that outsiders, in this case from the NFL, are also skeptical of the strength program.
It’s not just the outsiders questioning the strength and conditioning program, the offense coordinator, Graham Harrell said his running backs were out of shape, didn’t he ? 😂😂

See, this is where Gomer shows just how out of his league he is. Why not do this in the Spring, Summer ? The Fresno St kid ran, the BYU kid ran, the Utah kid ran, almost all college QB’s are mobile now except ours, so this bullshit that all of a sudden Clancy Dumbass gets the idea to study NFL games to see how they handle running QB’s is absurd, a real head coach would have sent him to talk to real coaches in the off season.

I never thought Helton was the right coach, given his lack of experience. But I am now at a point where after reading Scottie’s posts for the last few years, he has completely worn me down.
I don’t really enjoy the games, even blowouts like last week. Just waiting for Helton to get fired so we can have a fresh start.

It’s like when Tollner or Hackett were the coach, you just didn’t care anymore and just hoped they would can him and make a good hire

Helton is not as bad as Hackett. The team couldn’t stand Hackett. But something tells me that Urban Meyer might be a little tiny bit better than both of them put together. Fortunately, Carol Folt has sent her most trusted confidant to talk to Meyer about the job. Unfortunately, he’s traveling about as fast as Tim Conway playing the 101 year old man on the Carol Burnett show —-he’s now halfway to the parking lot….

Deja vu, all over again.

I totally agree. Clay Helton is in his fourth year at a University, that should attract the best players on a national level, but the program is struggling. If he hasn’t done it yet, then he never will. Because the team was loaded with talent when he took over, but he somehow threw everything in reverse. #idiotcoach

Although I will never live to see a coach or player that Scott raves about, I have to agree with him (just this once today) Helton is trying to use blinker fluid to sell tires to an 80 year old widow from Kansas. It’s like when I use big words like Bruin to describe Russian Bears… Anyway I have for a long time thought that USC needs a football coach. I’m not sure if we can put Helton in the recycle bin because China has refused our dirty recyclables in the past few years and he is not a clean commodity.
I have to ask what the big deal about using backups. I mean the headlines are still coming in from all over about the injuries we have. I expect to see it flashing at Times Square – you know the one in New York “Flash Trojans use leftover benchwarmers for starters.” Does anybody ever get a scholarship to be a bench warmer? (except those kids whose parents paid cash for it)
