Why Can’t USC Handle A Better Schedule?

I suggested USC call Florida when the Gators’ A.D. said he was looking for game.

The USC arguement against it is that USC cannot handle two marquee out-of-conference games (Notre Dame, someone else) plus nine Pac-12 games and contend for the CFP.

Why not? Look at this season’s Pac-12 schedule: USC already played Stanford (awful) and Arizona (terrible). It plays Colorado this week. It still has Cal, who cannot score without its starting QB. And the big rival (UCLA) has won two games.

The sad part of the Helton era is a lot of these games can still be lost. But that’s five games that shouldn’t pose a real program too many problems. So why does adding Florida impact everything that?

What you feel about this really demonstrates what you think USC football is capable of these days.

  1. Until USC hires a real athletic director that realizes the potential for the football program, then don’t expect that schedule to become more competitive. Experienced administrators know Clay Helton’s not winning a national championships, so they need to put a coach in place, that they have confidence in before playing the big boys

  2. Wolf had to have made up the “USC argument” (correct spelling). In recent years, we’ve played Texas, Alabama, going to play ‘Bama again next year. And in each of those years, ND, too. What’s more likely is, USC expects those schools to step up and give us a “home & home”. Most won’t. They’re like ‘Bama and will only play us on a so-called neutral field. (Birmingham to Dallas is less than half the distance of Los Angeles to Dallas. So, neutral is hardly the case there.)

      1. Yup! Was only us, SUCLA and ND who had never scheduled a Div II school before. Now only those two can say that!

      1. We shouldn’t be like Washington State or Cal, but “everyone else” includes includes Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc.

        Nobody schedules Florida as their 2nd toughest non-conference opponent.

  4. To be honest, USC asked a school in Florida for a home and home schedule but amid the bruhaha of the invite Florida Atlantic backed out. They said, “Sorry we have the better coach.”
    Playing marquee matchup’s used to be a staple for USC it didn’t matter where or who as long as it showcased our football team. These days the only theater willing to showcase the Trojans is a one screen place in the back of Buffalo Bill’s Casino at Stateline Nevada. With our current coaching staff and no future replacements we are guaranteed the underdog role with any, ANY team not in the PAC12. I am pretty sure Kasier Fontana could give the team a real scare and because of injuries the teams would be about 6 months apart in age.
    To answer the question succinctly, We are not competitive at any level but our own scrimmages.

  5. In the old days, SC would play anyone anywhere. They used to play Georgia, florida, penn st, Arkansas, oklhahoma, Michigan, texas, ohio st, and nd as well. They are wimps in the AD department now.

  6. If USC wants to be at national championship level,
    they well need to play tougher teams like Florida to show they are serious.

    With regards to the present schedule, I believe
    ASU, Oregon, and UCLA will have victories.
