USC Morning Buzz: Penalty Problem

Remember how Clay Helton was going to focus on things like penalties this season?

USC ranks 110th in penalty yardage this season. The Trojans average 6.9 per game for 69.9 yards.

“I think sometimes you look up and you have two penalties at Notre Dame, and I think we’ve had a three-penalty game, a five-penalty game, a two-penalty game and then all of a sudden you get a crew that wants to throw 12 out there,” Helton said.

Maybe Helton should focus on something else.

Like the game plan.

“I really like the game plan Graham (Harrell) is putting together,” Helton said. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. I think the kids have gotten into it also. We’ve got some wrinkles that we’ll see how it goes, but we’re also very trusting.”

OK, maybe Helton should not focus on the game plan.

WTF does that mean ? And if Opie is calling the plays, why is it taking so long to get the play in ?

  2. USC penalties this year

    Fresno St 4-35
    Stanford 8-93
    BYU 5-44
    Utah 11-117
    UDUB 8-80
    ND 2-20
    UA 10-100

Gomer is right, (did I just say that ?) , when it comes to the PAC 12 games the officials are flag happy, or is it that the teams are poorly coached ? That being said, how many stupid ass 15 yard penalties does USC take per game because there is no repercussions from Gomer & Co ?

PC’s teams took a lot of penalties but they got away with it because they had top talent and coaching, neither applies these days, well maybe the talent but Gomer’s recruiting is taking care of that

    1. Agreed! The occasional 5 or 10 yard penalties I can accept. But we get far too many 15 yarders. For those, the player should sit out the half, or the rest of the game if there’s less than 10 minutes left in the half. (First half of following game, if it’s in the last 10 minutes of the game.) THEN they’ll think twice about doing something stupid.

  3. Kids? These are men, at least they’re supposed to be. The man thinks his players are kids…..let that sink in. His job is to be a leader of men, not kids.

  4. The PAC 12 officials were so starstruck by being on the field in South Bend that they ignored the penalties committed by the Irish, and penalized the Trojans for a roughing the passer penalty that never happened.

    1. To make up for it they didn’t call holding on the Irish that did happen and did happen and did happen. They were the worst group ever. I noticed they were not at the AZ game. But the only thing that can happen now is for the league to say they goofed and move on.

  5. Heltons punishment–
-Go to your room for a time out.—Then Hugs when they come out.
Pac 12 refs– are afraid to call a penalty against the Irish— for fear of going to hell.
