Slim Pickings On This USC Staff

A former USC All-American called me today and wanted to know who would even be qualified to serve as interim coach if Clay Helton were fired?

Dave Levy and Marv Goux,” I said.

It can’t be Clancy (No Personality) Pendergast with his defense that ranks No. 86 nationally. It can’t John (I’m coaching as bad as I can) Baxter.

It can’t be Genius Graham Harrell. Running backs coach Mike Jinks had an unsuccessful stint at Bowling Green, so he would be best. Plus he doesn’t have many backs to coach anyways.

  1. The best choice would be no interim coach. Just transitioning mid week after no pads practice Wednesday. The new head coach strolls out and takes the megaphone and says, “10 minutes to be out here in full pads anybody late 10 laps anybody grumbling 20 laps injured walk the laps…Go!
Shakes Helton’s hand gives him a hug and tells Helton he’s wanted in the Bohn yard. (New name for the AD’s office)
Announcement made Saturday before the game. All staff has a one game audition for their job going forward. Let’s see who’s to blame.

    1. That is actually how you stop the penalties, Rialto. I have one rule when it comes to teaching kids, players etc..: Words alone do not work. You tell a player not to commit bone headed penalties and that player is going to commit them. You tell the player AND bench him for a while- if not the rest of the game- find someone who will do the job as well, and that player will shape up asap. Concord De La Salle coach Bob Ladoceur practiced this and his team was the most fundamentally sound football team (with 3 winning streaks over 100 games and 5 national titles) in the nation during his tenure.

    1. I trust you’re joking. Even WITH coordinators and a head coach this team is at the bottom of the college football barrel when it comes to organization —can you imagine where we’d be if there weren’t somebody to call a timeout when the play clock is almost at zero, or when we need to substitute on defense, or when someone has to call a Pac 12 ref over to explain the rules? Helton, Harrell and Baxter are confused some of the time —but I’ll take that to this team being confused all the time.

  2. The last two times USC used an interim HC in football didn’t turn out so bad for them.

One of them won a thrilling Rose Bowl over Penn State and finished No. 3 in the country. And the other has the current No. 1 in all the land after beating none other than Nick Saban.

    1. So what’s the big problem? The poor guy made a little mistake that cheated a team out of a touchdown. Big deal. The offending Pac 12 ref paid dearly. He was suspended for ONE game.

  3. We could ask Jeff Fisher , Jack Del rio, Mike Garrett, Rodney Pete, Marcus Allen to step in. But, it really does not matter any of the assistant coaches can step in and lose the games. We are preparing for next year. I am sure anyone of them or any USC ex players would be happy to pinch hit. No hand wringing please. Just do it .
