I had a brief debate with a colleague today, who wanted to talk about what bowl USC will go to?
I told him that neither I nor most USC fans care about the bowl game. They only want to know when Clay Helton gets fired. They are more interested in the Sunday or Monday after the USC-UCLA game than a bowl game. They want to know who Mike Bohn will hire?
For the record, Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has USC playing Iowa in the Holiday Bowl.
100% agree. all I care about is the day we fire Helton. I have been wanting this day to happen every since the beat down in Texas vs Bama and then the day in South Bend we got beat down, oh and the OSU game and oh yeah Oregon……….Yes I liked the Rose Bowl year but everyone knew our coach sucked, it was all on Sam’s shoulders.

I haven’t heard anything re: UM, but Bohn is laying the groundwork to terminate CH. Today, he spoke favorably about the win, then reminded us about the importance of attendance, recruiting, and fan support, three areas that are seriously lacking under CH. It’s perfect. When the fateful day of Clay’s release arrives, Bohn will pull out the football program’s downward trajectory in revenues, attendance, and recruiting during his tenure and show him the door. It’s hard to argue with the numbers. Clay will leave without fanfare or incident. AMF.

True.
But, the team we play sadly will have more fans than USC.
Terrible. Just Terrible.

Well if you are terminally optimistic you believe that USC wins out and Utah loses to UCLA. Then USC beats Oregon or whoever is the North representative and is eligible for the Rose Bowl. But wait there’s more. Because Ohio State might be in the running for the championship game USC would see a second tier Big 10 team.
This could happen. But it is more likely that the regional tooth fairy will make your child’s tooth her first stop and unfortunately die of a heart attack, dropping a sack of gold coins on your stairway after fleeing a neighborhood cat that entered your home through an unused doggie door to make a snack out of the bag toting fairy. If neither of these scenarios happen, I will be disenchanted with my favorite team yet once again.
Being honest a non New Year’s day bowl is just hard to get excited about. I’ll probably forget to watch.

If I were going, which I am not, I would care. Not because of the prestige or opponent of the bowl, but because I would want to be somewhere warm with something to do apart from the game. The sun bowl is a flat no go. Holiday bowl is significantly better.

.The bowls have pretty much lost their luster. If it helps with recruiting and the players take it as a parting gift, the team should go bowling. Otherwise, who cares?
IMHO if it makes SW get up and work, count me in.

I do not care if we go to a bowl game or whether we beat UCLA. My biggest win would be the firing of Helton. At that point my season is ,made.

The only Bowl I’m interested in is the; “ Happy to See You Go” Bowl, sponsored by All State, who protects you from mayhem like Helton…Swann, Haden,Nikias, Sarkisian, Kiffin, even Mike Garrett, will attend his going away bash… Yogi Roth and Reggie Bush can co-host.

Whiney? dude our team sucks. I am sick of wasting my time and money to watch this joke of a coach. I am a graduate and lifelong fan that has spent a lot of money on USC and I have the right to be pissed. Call it whiney? Totally fine with me but I am not just writing here. I have personally called Bohn, and BOT members and well as reached out to Dr. Folt. I do not whine I am doing what I can to get rid of our dumpster fire coach. a bowl game is not relevant for me. what is relevant as Helton is gone. that is all that matters.

Yes……I do mind……in the short run the Rose Bowl sounds great……but if it results in keeping a coach and staff that is not able to do their jobs properly……the toilet bowl sounds OK.
Its a real shame because a true AD would know that we have an incompetent coach that depends on the talent difference between USC and the pitiful pac 12 to win. The win and loss record should not mean much…….but……its a real world and firing someone who just played in a rose bowl is not going to happen.

Irrespective of one’s wishes/obsessions for the inevitable coaching change, winning the last two games in Nov and going to a top tier bowl game are relevant. Real CFB fans know that the added practice (hopefully more than CCH held for the ill-fated debacle against Wisconsin years ago) and added game experience are highly important to player development, recruiting, and finances. Win your top tier bowl game and improve for next year and become “part of the conversation.”
Real Trojans will travel (San Diego or San Antonio are great destinations compared to many of the cold or backwater stadiums on offer to most schools) or attend a watch party to support the student-athletes who’ve been busting their freaking asses since July. Tailgate with your brethren.
Bitch out loud when bad coaching and bad referees conspire against us. Slap high fives when someone does something right, and enjoy watching the Senior players who will never get to don the Cardinal and Gold ever again.
For fuxake, dudes.

Dude I love when people toss around Real Trojans.
Notre Dame in South Bend 14 times
C&G member and season ticket holder 20 year
Applied to one school and attended that school USC in 995
Saw Marcus Allen run crazy on Oklahoma in 1981
Attend I think every Rose Bowl game with USC in my lifetime
Saw Todd M drop the dime to beat Tommy Maddox in 91.
Saw Friggin Tony Rice run through the middle to beat my beloved Rodney Peete whose front-page picture of SI was on my wall. GUNNING FOR #1
Saw Fresno State kill Larry smith.
Saw Saban Roll Helton and Urban.
Does this resume speak to a being a Real Trojan?
and no I do not care about the bowl. so I guess I am not a real trojan. Would love to know how a real trojan is defined.

Yes, your resume speaks to being a Real Trojan. We’d have a lot to talk about. I share your frustration with the current state of affairs at the school and on the playing fields.
Me?
Never attended a game until my freshman year. Boy was that first game cool. I did watch every game on TV from 1969 (USC UCLA, Sam Dickerson) to 1979–KTLA5 rebroadcast every game on Sunday, remember?
1979 Tried to Walk on, got cut despite 4.7 40 time. Weighed 150 drippin wet. Hit the weight room, run better patterns, catch some balls.
1980 Cut again. Hit weight room harder, run better…catch MORE…
1981 Cut again. Harder, better, MORE
1982 Made It. RUN A 4.6 40 and BP 280+. Not bad for 155 lbs. All the walk on WR who made the team instead of me never finished a season.
I did MF tackling drill every MF full pad Tue/Wed. MF painful. Only 3 of us lined up to carry the ball for tackling drill–Todd Steele, Walk-on FB Willie, me. Went against #1 D every MF day–Achica, Del Rio, The Browner brothers, Bickett, Darby. That was a MONSTER MF D. No one scored on ’em. Had we not been on probation for scalpin tix, would have gone 11-0 and to the Rose Bowl.
1983 Same as 1982, only we sucked and went 4-6-1 for Tollner.
1984-88 USC Med School. If I wasn’t at old LAC Med Ctr, I was at the Coliseum.
1989 Moved to Colorado for 30 years.* There were some years that in Nov, ABC would show the UNM vs NM state game instead of USC UCLA.
Fer FUXAKE! I was in Purgatory–if not worse. TRUE MF STORY. Busy surgeons don’t go to any game, let alone a bowl game. (Late in my practice years I did trade TWO call days (I goy 1 in return) with my MD partner so I could drive down to El Paso for THAT Sun Bowl. It was a 24 disappointing hours, but I hung out with some cool Trojans and yelled for my boys. It had been about 22 years without my brethren).
“You don’t know whatcha got until it’s taken away from ya’.”
I’ve made a few games since retiring. Gonna make a bunch more before I die. I went to a school of winners, and I’ll be loyal to ’em forever.
I’ll stick by each and every word in my prior statement above.
FrankJ. Mayer, MD
*I had just moved to Denver in 1988, when a patient asked me where I had attended Medical School.
“USC, sir.”
“Mighty fine school we gots down there in Pyeeblow, don’t you think?”
He thought I had attended the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo, which didn’t have a Med School. True MF story.

All hope is in limbo until a new Head Coach is announced. Bowl game only matters if we play a unique school like Florida, Texas A&M, or even Texas. If we play some middling ACC or Big 10 team…..I’ll barf. That said, we don’t deserve to play the teams I listed…so, no I don’t care.

If USC plays in a bowl, it matters. It’s just sad knowing our players are led by incompetent coaches. To win despite the coaching is the burden of our players, and I’ve seen it happen too often this season to ignore that phenomenon.
I will certainly watch, but I won’t go to any game until they purge the coaching staff and hire UM.

Rose Bowl ! Still got a shot. If not, then Holiday. Local…. and there probably would be lots of interest because our new coach would be in attendance.
