USC Desperately Needs Recruits

It’s kind of crazy how USC is offering scholarships right now when Clay Helton could be fired after the UCLA game.

But USC offered a prospect today who had a top 7 list that included four Mountain West schools.

I wonder how Helton would explain the recruiting class to Mike Bohn?

“The job speculation has hurt me,” he might say.

But he got the five-year contract extension and Lynn Swann backed him after last season. This has been Helton’s doing.

Is it possible a coaching candidate would be turned off when they look at the current recruiting class (ranked in the 70’s)?

    1. You can’t blame poor recruiting on Coach Clay Helton! As a coach of the world class institution, he is hamstrung by the high standard of admission at USC! Plus all the top recruits lately are afraid to compete! Besides, Clay has an exceptional eye for hidden talents. He is bringing in guys under the radar and will turn them into superstars ala Sam Darnold!

Sam Darnold was a 2 star QB at San Clemente where his record as a senior was 3-7! Clay turned a loser into a winner!

  1. This is why Gomer MUST be fired right after the ucla game and a new coach put in place otherwise this recruiting class will go down as one of if not the worst in school history.

The new transfer portal can get you good players, but USC cannot wait to fire this utter disaster of a coach, thank Haden and Swann, you incompetent boobs.

  2. Recruiting can change in a heartbeat if the right coach is hired!(Urban Meyer) Plenty of 4 and 5 star recruits will come to SC, but we better not wait too long with the early signing period. Hopefully top recruits have already been informed of changes.

  3. This statistic will be a cornerstone for why Bohn will replace Helton.

Helton is a .500 coach with recruiting classes that average about 5th in the country.

It will be a disaster in the future with the way recruiting is headed now.

      1. Sam Darnold was .300 without Helton in high school! Helton turned Sam Darnold into a rich man! I’m sure Dornold is thankful everyday for Clay Helton!

  4. SCooter,
Question: Most of us know that Larry Smith lived off of Tolner’s recruits and when it was time, Smith’s recruiting was horrible. So my question is, who is the worst recruiter between Smith and Helton? We got’s to know.

    1. You forgot at the time the powers to be wanted to change the perception of a athletic university to try and be like Stanford. Larry was not able to recruit like he wanted to—not that he was a great coach but his hands were tied. His comments after the Fresno St. game killed him. Tolner was a great recruiter but not so much of a coach.

  5. A new coach is not obligated to honor the offers that Clay Helton made to those recruits. But it would be wise to cherry pick a few for depth purposes, then sign a larger class next year. USC’s roster is young, and the PAC 12 is extremely weak, so I think the incoming coach can get away with it

    1. Great insight, Fan Boy.
The O and D are deep with freshmen, redshirt F, soph, redshirtSoph and a few key juniors. Next year’s (2021) class has to be blockbuster. A few late pick ups for 2020 would be nice.

Some key transfers and maybe a JUCO (rarely done by USC, but a few good ones along the way) pick up…and BOOM!

      Need the right coach.

  6. Honestly, Meyer comes in and is announced and the flips will start coming like crazy. When a school goes from worst coach in history to one of the best, people pay attention. There are a lot of kids wanted to come to USC, but not come to play for CH.
