A Historic San Francisco Rally

The Friday night USC rally in San Francisco got moved from Union Square to UN Plaza because the ice rink is set up at Union Square.

And it’s the final rally here for band director Art Bartner, who is retiring this year.

“We have the best wide receivers in the country. Michael Pittman, Amon-Ra St. Brown, David London . . . and who’s the other guy?” Bartner said.

The crowd answered, “Tyler Vaughns.”

  1. Forget it…he’s rolling. Have to admire Art Bartner’s enthusiasm and dedication – it will be missed.

Plus he’s one heck of a band leader. Fight on!

  2. Bartner was there when I was a kid and I’m ready to retire. He took a band of mostly music majors, it was a required at one time, and turned it into the premier college band. They might be able to keep it up, but I doubt there’ll ever be a one up of what Art has done.

  3. Dr. Bartner and his band have always exemplified the motto, “FIGHT ON!”
In his first ten years at USC, we never lost games–certainly not at home.
    Nice intro for the professor.

As the lackluster mid to late 80’s (2-3 good years with R. Peete excluded) and 90’s evolved, the band still played their hearts out every week, despite average performances by the teams on the gridiron, and mostly mediocre performances by the MBB team.

I’ll be watching tonight from a nice warm seat in my home, while these kids (and Dr. Bartner) will be banging it out to beyond midnight in a damp, chilly, old stadium. They are the Spirit of Troy.

    Are you?
