Morning Buzz: Pick The USC-Cal Score

Cal has not beaten USC in consecutive seasons since 1998-2000 when the Bears won three straight. Can Justin Wilcox pull it off in his first two seasons? He has to take some satisfaction in that his job seems safe and the guy who fired him — Clay Helton — is on his last legs.

Who do you like tonight? USC’s healthier than last week and Cal has QB Chase Garbers back.

I will make my pick later today.

  1. I haven’t seen Cal play this year, but Justin Wilcox is smarter then Bozo Helton, as most Pac 12 coaches are. But the Trojans receivers have delivered most of the season

    1. Been 40+ years since Mr. Roth passed away.
      I remember.

I doubt anyone playing for Cal cares much.

That said, their two linebackers will have epic games. Could Weaver log 20 tackles? I’ll be happy with >100 yr on the ground, 280 in the air, and anything over 21 pts. Our defense with Drake Jackson is better this year than last year, aren’t they?

There’s a lot of leople who knew & liked Joe. I care. I liked the guy. He used to roam around the Pi Phi house with me.
Shelby Hildebrand & Joe were an item. She’s a nurse in San Diego.

  2. Trojans 56- Cal 9! Clay Helton leads the Trojans to victory with a walk- on QB after Slovis and Fink breaks arm and leg respectively! I predict Mike Bohn will extend Clay Helton with a lifetime extension after the historic win!

  3. Bitterness and frustration have finally been eclipsed by apathy…there can be no way that Bohn keeps CH …of course I thought there was no way the golfing AD would give CH an extension. After last year’s stellar mess, I thought there was no way, CH would return…..Now, I just don’t care…I wouldn’t want him of his Bevis and Butthead assistants, coaching my grandson’s flag football team…
    SC 27 Cal 14…. cuz Cal sucks….
Can’t wait for the fans to see this team at their Bowl Game… the rumblings are that reps from several prestigious bowls, including, the Toilet Bowl–I know, not original–the Barf Bowl, Hell-No Bowl, Hey-Hey-No Way Bowl,, Gimme a Break Bowl, and You’re Kidding, Right? Bowl, will be in attendance…

    1. I agree with this part, Ben:

Maybe I’m giving Swan too much credit, but I don’t recall hearing a bunch of high profile names available LAST YEAR to replace CCH. I liked Matt Campbell, Dave Aranda, Brett Venables, and James Franklin last year. Campbell is going off my list. Now, UM is in the “conversation.” Could keeping CCH one more year to coach what has been a brutal schedule with an inexperienced team be “fortuitous?”

Penn State has some very interesting strength, conditioning, and agility concepts. You gotta look hard to see what they are doing differently to compete with the blue bloods in the Big “10”.

You got great young, experienced talent for next year!

      1. You have a point, Bourbon… Even if there were some good potential hires out there, does anybody believe Swann would have hired one and not some former SC player/NFL coach, think, Fisher or Del Rio? (Pete Carroll was not a stroke of Mike Garrett’s genius, it was all pure luck) No…so we endure another painful season… the silver lining in all of this might just be that SC has an AD with no previous affiliation to the school…an AD, that will look at the empty seats, the frustration/apathy of most of Trojan Nation, and do the right thing…if he doesn’t? I refuse to ponder my own question…And, while we’re at it, can we get a real basketball coach? Enfield needs to join CH on the tarmac….

  4. Not the same blog without the Hawaiian Barrister Michael Gaurino and Pudly76, who has more inside info than Scottie missing.

    Fellas, need you back here.

      1. Why would you want to replace the Rose Bowl winning coach. Clay Hilton with the coach who got his ass kicked in Franklin?

  5. Its pretty simple. We have lately started the season poorly. This year 3-3 and the fan base loses interest. So next year if we lose to Alabama the way we did last time. Interesting times begin

  6. Trojans have averaged 25 pts against the four top 17 defenses (per FPI) this year–and that included the 14 points Fink and team put up against UW (3 ints for Matt in Seattle 😦 )
Cal presently is #20 per FPI.

USC 27 Cal 21, and a nice tumbler of Weller’s special reserve for me sometime around 1AM MST Sunday!

(I posted USC 24 earlier elsewhere. Feeling more confident after AM coffee)

  7. I’m at the gun show in S.F. today. Yet to step in any poo. Be at the Clairemont Hotel at 1600. Classic Berkeley. Only God loves California, SF & Berkeley but he might be pissed at all three. Shuttle to the game.
Gonna be a good game. Somebody will win. My bet is on Wilcox out coaching Mr. Helton. SC talent might prevail. Good luck.

Wolfman needs to up the site security NOW or no one will post.

  8. Revenge was the lead in the morning paper, but actually just doing your job should be the buzz word. I like the Trojans to leave Cal 3.14 on the bears face.
Another thought for today; not much to do here since some homophobic myopic teenagers discovered the great flaw in Scott’s blog. With any correctly formatted email address anybody can call themselves anything.
The real news here is that these morons don’t know the art of imitation, they have very little imagination, so it was easy to spot the fakes. I hope MG comes back just for the neck of it. Nobody should get chased off a blog as meaningless as this one.
And finally I think we can give Owns a bit of leeway this coming week. He will be busier than a one-armed wall paper hanger with poison oak on his bum all week. He will be split like Jecyll and Hyde trying to decide the winner of the bIG game next week. Part of him will want the Booins to drop 55 on our Trojans. Another part of him, knowing it will definitely be the last nail in the Helton coffin will be hoping the Trojans eek out a dribble of a win. The former is pure Ucla fan, the latter is intelligent Ucla fan (if there is such a thing) knowing it could rid the Charmin bears of their own overpriced coach.
Take Owns with a grain of slug repellent.
