Art Bartner Issues Another Apology

USC band director Art Bartner released a statement tonight apologizing to the family of Bryce Turner and Cal for the Trojan band playing during the planned tribute at Saturday night’s game at Memorial Stadium.

  1. Bullshit. That’s on Cal. All they had to do was ask. Bartner doesn’t run the stadium or their tributes. He was doing what bands do -entertain during boring commercials. Cal needs to get over themselves.

      1. You misunderstood what I meant. I expected Cal to notify the band, not the other way around. As I said it is normal for bands to strike up a tune during a break, so it is up to stadium management to notify both bands when there is a special deviation from the norm. USC lets visiting bands know when there will be awards or other ceremonies during breaks. Breaks average 3 to 5 minutes so there is plenty of time to play a pep tune. USC had done joint half time shows and shortened shows for visiting bands. Stadium management knows about these things and coordinates them. It is on them not us.

      1. I was at the game. 99% of the people that I talked to did not think it was an honest mistake. I was told that the instructions were gone over three separate times to make sure that things went smoothly.

It would be sad if this were to happen but I was told that those in the know believe that there is more than a 50/50 chance the TMB will never be allowed to perform again at Memorial Stadium during a FB game.

    1. Might want to change your moniker.

No one over the last 50 years has personified the “Spirit of Troy” or the motto, FIGHT ON(!), than Dr. Arthur Bartner. NO ONE.

Neither he nor his band has ever embarrassed our school. Can’t say the same about many of our FB and basketball players and coaches.

Rialto, in his post above, is spot on.

      1. Cal 75-Don’t be silly. It’s not like your neighbors in Palo Alto came in. Stanford is to the best of my knowledge the only PAC 12 band that has banned by any other schools. The chance of USC’s band being disinvited in two years is highly unlikely. They’re as much a part of the school’s contingent as the song girls or the team. Besides they fill 200 or so seats in your empty stadium.
I doubt anybody you spoke to, knew the intent of the band as they played. I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be disrespectful to the family of or friends of the player being memorialized.
But hey how about that Big 10 wannabe Cal band. The only nice thing I can say about them is they don’t urinate on the field the way the aforementioned neighbors do.

    2. PT to call you a moron would denigrate morons everywhere.
Please tell me you can read 8 to 16 lines of music, in three different clefs with key changes and time signature changes any day of the week. The average conductor of a band can do this and more. Can you detect when one of the forty first trumpet players is playing the wrong note and which one it is? How about can you consistently hold a beat at 108 beats per minute while reading the above mentioned music?
I know there are those who think Dr. Bartner plays Tribute to Troy too often, but they usually the same idiots who think that song is the fight song.
It is better that they keep their mouths shut and be considered idiots, than to post herein and remove all doubt.
